Purpose of Position

Provide clinical management and treatment of patients at the Belmont Campus and JHCH New Lambton within the scope of practice granted by the Hunter New England Health (HNEH) Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee. The role includes:

  • Providing a safe, efficient and effective General Paediatric inpatient and outpatient service at consultant level to the John Hunter Children's Hospital and Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD)
  • Conducting privately referred outpatient clinics at the Belmont Campus and at other locations within HNELHD as necessary
  • Providing an acute on call service at the John Hunter Children's Hospital
  • Providing consultative service to the Emergency Department and other departments within the John Hunter Children's Hospital including NEXUS
  • Providing paediatric liaison with the community health services in the Greater Newcastle Sector in relation to children with developmental and behavioural problems and child protection concerns
  • Contribute to John Hunter Children's Hospital service direction and planning and the effective management of resources
  • Engage in Undergraduate and Postgraduate educational activities and staff development programmes within Belmont Hospital facilities and the John Hunter Children's Hospital
  • Provide professional leadership for health professionals including participation in quality and risk management activities

John Hunter Children's Hospital is looking for an experienced Staff Specialist in General Paediatrics to join our team. Above all, you will be committed to Excellence - Every Patient, Every Time.

You will provide expertise in the clinical management and treatments of patients of John Hunter Children's Hospital General Paediatric Service whilst maintaining safe, effective and professional patient care for Children, Young People and Families within Hunter New England Local Health District and surrounding areas. You will provide support and promote seamless continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient services.

You will have a commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and supervision and participate in quality activities, professional development and continuing education.

Applicants must hold a medical degree registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (in Paediatrics).

Selection Criteria

Registrable as a medical practitioner with the AHPRA. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics) and/or Equivalent Specialty Qualifications/Other specialist recognition as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1973 Evidence of and commitment to medical education including the delivery of undergraduate teaching programmes. Education skills to enable suitable teaching for medical and other staff including undergraduate students Evidence of current participation in formal programs to ensure maintenance of professional standards (MyCPD or equivalent) Evidence of Clinical competence, training and familiarity with contemporary issues in Paediatric Medical Practice including physical abuse and neglect and child sexual assault, advanced paediatric life support. Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and/or training as required Commitment to the improvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and the delivery of culturally sensitive Paediatric services Clinical skills necessary to handle any paediatric or resuscitation procedure relevant to this level of paediatric service Excellent written and verbal communication skills and high level of computer literacy Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
