The role 

Reporting to the Manager, Mental Health Act Administration, you will be responsible for providing expert advice on the Mental Health Act 2016 and supporting the Chief Psychiatrist in fulfilling statutory functions.  You will liaise and consult with a range of key stakeholders to ensure the effective operation of the Mental Health Act 2016 as it relates to the criminal justice system including taking the lead on instructing legal representatives of the Branch regarding consumer matters before the Mental Health Court. You will liaise regularly with the Hearings Coordinators of the Mental Health Review Tribunal and will contribute to the analysis and evaluation of policies and procedures to ensure mental health services meet the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2016.  In addition, you will also contribute to strategies to improve compliance and will participate in the development of education and information resources for stakeholders. 

The successful person

You will have expert knowledge of the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2016 and an understanding of the legislation that directly impacts on people with a disability.  You will understand the safeguards that protect the rights of mental health consumers and possess a detailed knowledge of the mental health service and criminal justice systems.  You will have an analytical background with proven experience in utilising this expertise to develop mental health policy solutions to complex problems.  In addition, you can speak to your successes in building and maintaining effective professional and consultative relationships and your ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
