Research Assistant

We currently require a Full Time laboratory Research Assistant on a 12-month contract to join the Translational Bioinformatics Group.

A position is available for a Research Assistant with strong experience in molecular biology and human cell culture. The position will assist with the development and execution of laboratory research into genetic disorders. This will include developing and performing functional assays on patient samples (DNA/RNA/cell lines), assisting with the development of novel genomic approaches to investigate genetic disorders and for ensuring that necessary laboratory maintenance occurs to facilitate a smooth running laboratory.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Performing functional studies on patient cell lines or tissue samples.
  • Maintaining organised collections of patient samples.
  • Validation of variants through Sanger or targeted amplicon sequencing.
  • Delivering experimental outcomes on time.
  • Liaising with other members of the laboratory and with local and national collaborators.
  • Maintaining full documentation and filing of all material and data.
  • Contributing to the publication of work performed, including writing, review of drafts and literature reviews.
  • Presenting outcomes from the research team both verbally and in written form.
  • Contributing to the writing and co-ordination of human and animal research ethics applications.
  • Undertaking, from time to time, supervision and/or training of visitors, postgraduate, undergraduate and work experience students.

Key Selection Criteria

To be successful in this role you will have:

Essential

  • Working with Children & National Police Clearance (if appointed) in compliance with the Victorian Governments Child Safety Standards.
  • Tertiary qualification in BSc/Honours/Masters or related discipline, plus an appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and manipulation.
  • Substantial practical experience with recombinant DNA methods.
  • Highly developed organisational skills.
  • The right to reside and work in Australia and you meeting any applicable visa conditions.

Desirable

  • Experience with extraction and analysis or RNA including quantitative PCR.
  • Experience in library preparation for high throughput sequencing (RNA or DNA).
  • Experience in the design and use of CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technology.
  • Experience with manipulation of proteins including western analysis.
