The City of Sydney, one of Australia’s premier Councils, has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic professional to join our Data and Information Management Services Unit.

In this role, you will work closely with the Manager Information Management, data and information management colleagues and business managers, and lead a team of archivists and volunteers. You will be responsible for:

  • Delivering a program to capture, manage, preserve and make publicly available the permanent records of the City’s core business activities from 1842 and their impact on communities and people in the Sydney local government area.
  • Providing authoritative professional advice to the City on all aspects of archives and public information access matters.
  • Advising on and contributing to the design for compliant records retention and disposal in a digital business environment for born digital records and for information in business systems.
  • Providing professional archival services to the City including appraisal, preservation, disposal and access services in accordance with agreed standards and procedures and consistent with best practice.
  • Maintaining a strategic focus and applying innovative approaches to the application of systems and tools for the capture, management, preservation and use of the archives collection.
  • Ensuring public awareness of and engagement with the archives collection.

To be successful you will have:

  • Extensive experience as a professional archivist leading an archival program, and eligible for professional membership of the Australian Society of Archivists Inc.
  • The ability to communicate and work with City managers and staff, and with customers, in a professional manner and in a constructive and collaborative team environment.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of archival / recordkeeping principles and practices across multiple aspects of the discipline, and standing as a recognised authority on archival systems, archives metadata management, collection services, and policy.
  • Experience in development of archives policy, strategies and implementation plans, and the design, delivery, and evaluation of archives programs in a government context and in a digital business environment.
  • Experience in managing a research facility for public access to archival records for personal, academic professional or commercial reasons and in coordinating requests for access to information under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009.
  • A proven track record in initiating, implementing, and successfully completing major projects such as implementing archives management or public access systems.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and initiative and deal with complex detailed operational and conceptual problems and tasks including new situations where there is little or no precedent.

  • Completed or willing to complete Certificate IV in Frontline Management or equivalent
