About the Clinical Tropical Medicine Laboratory:

The Clinical Tropical Medicine Laboratory investigates how parasites such as the malaria parasite, hookworm, threadworm and scabies cause disease and how they become resistant to drugs used to treat them. The group also identifies new drugs and drug targets, and develops novel diagnostic techniques.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and provide mathematical biology collaboration with researchers within HMMU and for its partners and clients. This role includes:
  • Development of mathematical biology resources, methods and models
  • Design and analysis of mathematical biology components of clinical trials and related collaborative projects 
  • Delivery of training courses in methods and practice of mathematical biology.
  • Write technical and regulatory reports for mathematical biology components and models of studies conducted by HMMU and prepare manuscripts for publication based on these studies and methodology initiatives.
  • Perform duties as an independent, innovative mathematical biologist, with limited direction as to work priorities.
  • Manage and lead mathematical and statistical colleagues. 
  • Assist in the supervision of postgraduate researchers within HMMU.
  • Ensure work practices comply with the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety Act, related legislative requirements and the Institute’s OH&S policies and procedures.

About you:

To be successful in this role you are expected to have technical knowledge and experience in the following essential criteria;

  • PhD or equivalent in mathematical biology, statistics or data science.
  • Sound knowledge of mathematical biology techniques and procedures applicable to medical research.
  • Extensive experience in mathematical biology and collaborative research with peer-reviewed publications.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas: mathematical biology, biostatistics, laboratory based studies, clinical trials, biology of infectious diseases, population modelling or simulation modelling.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and motivate a small group of quantitative colleagues.
  • Good written, problem solving and oral communication skills, including ability to motivate and communicate mathematical biology concepts to scientists and clinicians.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently with minimal direction in multi-disciplinary teams as well as autonomously. Desirable
  • Knowledge of malaria biology or other infectious diseases or the potential to acquire this knowledge.
  • Well established organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and coordinate tasks across multiple projects to meet competing deadlines.
  • Previous experience in clinical, public health or epidemiology research settings.
  • Familiarity with the Australian code for the responsible conduct of research.
