Your role

Your submarine is cruising at periscope depth through international waters, in an area where tensions are high. Far away a surface vessel poses a potential threat. In this critical role you'll be the first person to detect the threat, interpret the electronic signals you receive, and relay the information to your Captain.

This could be a typical scenario for you as a Submariner Electronic Warfare in the Navy.

It takes a special kind of resourcefulness to join the Deep Elite, living and working with a close-knit team in the unique environment of a Collins Class submarine. But the rewards are many and varied and the onboard camaraderie is like no other.

In this demanding role you'll use sensitive computerised electronic receivers that can detect, classify, identify, locate and record electronic emissions (such as radio and radar) in your vicinity. You will be taught how to operate this electronic warfare equipment, and how to exploit and defend the electromagnetic spectrum in an extremely complex environment.

Given the limited crew size on submarines, every submariner gains the skills and knowledge to multitask on their vessel and react in the shortest possible time to incidents as they occur. This means you will also learn to handle and maintain small arms, and perform duties such as:

  • surface lookout
  • helmsman, and
  • first response fire fighter.

If you enjoy combining teamwork with technology, have a good eye for detail, and work well under pressure, this is your chance to embark on a really worthwhile career. Better still, you’ll be working for a dynamic organisation that offers a great lifestyle plus opportunities you simply won’t find anywhere else.

So do you think you have the qualities and resolve to become a Submariner Electronic Warfare? Then apply now (below).

Salary

  • Fully-paid trade training
  • Once trained, earn over $78,000 p.a. plus superannuation
  • Numerous other benefits

Location

  • With a submarine based at HMAS Stirling near Perth
  • Or when rotated to a shore-based role, Adelaide, Canberra, Nowra NSW, Rockingham WA or Sydney
  • Some of your time will be spent at sea

Entry Requirements

  • At least 17 years of age
  • Australian Citizen
  • Year 10 completion with passes in English and Mathematics (and ideally, Science)

Medical and fitness guidelines also apply.
