Opportunity

As an Army Doctor (also known as Medical Officer), look after the health of personnel and their families while enjoying:

  • an excellent salary plus generous superannuation
  • ongoing investment in your personal and career development
  • free medical and dental
  • a good work/life balance
  • leadership training and vocational variety
  • subsidised accommodation
  • a supportive team environment
  • travel and leave entitlements
  • free access to sports and fitness facilities
  • friendships that last a lifetime

All that plus exciting opportunities supporting Army domestic activities, including exercises and operations, with potential deployments overseas in support of Australian and coalition personnel.

Your role

As a fully-qualified doctor – or a student of medicine – you'll be well aware of the need to respond to a wide variety of medical conditions, along with unexpected situations that may be outside your experience.

Now imagine the extra dimension the role takes on when your patients are Army personnel and you're working in a field hospital or on an exercise with elite troops. Or if your temporary 'practice' is a community that's been devastated by a natural disaster.

When you step up to the challenge of becoming an Army Doctor (Medical Officer), you'll work across many disciplines including:

  • primary care
  • occupational medicine
  • trauma and rehabilitation
  • sports medicine
  • public health medicine
  • tropical medicine
  • medical administration, and
  • population health.

The skills you acquire along the way will help you provide the highest standards of medical care, even in adverse conditions with minimal support and equipment.

In time you may apply for study streams that include orthopaedics and general surgery, emergency medicine, intensive care medicine and anaesthetics. And as an Army Officer you'll learn to be an inspirational leader and mentor.

Few medical positions offer the clinical variety and travel opportunities the Army can. If this sounds like a new challenge you'd like to accept, apply now (below).

Salary

  • Fully-paid officer training
  • Once trained and on Medical Level 1, starting package approx. $93,600 p.a. plus superannuation
  • Progression to Medical Level 2 (which can be expected within 12 to 18 months) attracts a substantial increase
  • Numerous other benefits

Location

  • Training in Canberra, ACT and Bonegilla, VIC
  • Postings could be to any Army Medical Company, Medical Centre or Military Hospital

Entry Requirements

  • Australian Citizen

You can enter the Army as a fully-registered medical practitioner, a medical graduate or as a medical undergraduate with fewer than four years left to study. Use the position description link below for full details of the qualifications required along with medical and fitness guidelines.
