We are currently looking for Senior Urban Designers . Working for our Local Government clients you will enjoy secure contract work within great working environments. This is a foot in the door and can lead to more permanent opportunities within council.

Focusing on a number of diverse open space and urban planning projects including, playgrounds, new dog park, outdoor gyms, street landscape improvements, way finding signage and outdoor art installations. Specific Projects including community consultation, concept design, procurement and project management. Position may also be required to project manage other external design consultants. Looking for experienced and capable design professionals for an immediate start.

Your Role will include

  • Provide a range of design services that support the delivery of high quality public places and spaces, enhanced city image and effective community and stakeholder engagement.
  • Provide input to the development of plans, policies, and strategies that provide direction for the future development of open space and the public realm.
  • Work collaboratively with Council staff in other service areas and external stakeholders to foster commitment to high quality design outcomes within the public and private realms.
  • Develop and promote innovative ideas and design solutions that raise the standard of public open space development, city image and the profile of the municipality.
  • Assist in the development of guidelines, standards, and procedures that achieve Council’s strategic city image and urban design objectives within the public realm and in private developments, where applicable.
  • Assist project management staff in the development of project briefs for design consultancy services
  • Prepare and contribute to concept plans, detailed design and construction documentation for various public space improvements.
  • Prepare high quality graphic presentations that clearly communicate design intentions to a range of stakeholders.
  • Co-ordinate and manage consultants from a range of disciplines to deliver on specific urban projects.
  • Develop and implement project briefs, schematic designs, concept plans and contract documentation specifically for city image, urban design and open space projects.
  • Contribute to and implement the Open Space and City Design Unit works program consistent with Council objectives.
  • Attend meetings as required throughout the project construction phase to ensure the effective delivery of designs.
  • Undertake project management and contract administration of specific urban projects.
  • Investigate and identify partnerships and external funding opportunities, prepare submissions and complete acquittal requirements.
  • Provide timely input to relevant Council strategy and policy development and major planning and capital works projects specifically representing city image, urban design and public space design.
  • Act as one of Council’s advisors in the area of city image, urban design and public space design.
  • Provide technical landscape design advice on planning permit applications referred from Statutory Planning and Planning Scheme Amendments.
  • Advise on city image and public space design initiatives that may impact upon Planning Scheme Amendments in consultation with the relevant Council directorates.
  • Establish effective communication within the organisation and with community stakeholders to encourage input and partnership in city image, urban design and open space planning, development and implementation.
  • Provide advice and assistance to internal staff in the development of public space projects, resolution of issues or requests.
  • Prepare and contribute to the development of graphic material for presentations and consultation purposes.
  • Provide customer request and administration support to the Open Space and City Design Unit.

SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Demonstrated commitment and experience in the area of urban, public and park space planning and design.
  • Well established consultation, negotiation and liaison skills.
  • Excellent written, graphic, verbal communication and public presentation skills.
  • Strong technical and design abilities with experience in undertaking conceptual design, design development and contract documentation for a range of open space and public realm improvements.
  • Project management and contract administration experience, including knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, requirements for contractors undertaking built works and project management methodology.
  • Sound knowledge of current trends in recreation, landscape architecture and urban design theories and methodologies and skills in applying these

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Tertiary degree in Landscape Architecture, Horticultural Science, Urban Planning and Design, or equivalent.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD.
  • High quality graphic presentation and design skills.
  • Current Victorian driver’s licence.
  • Preference for minimum 5 years’ experience in a, landscape architecture, urban design, horticultural landscape design practice or similar.
  • Local government experience
  • Proficient in Adobe software, especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • 3D drafting skills.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Demonstrated creative and innovative landscape or urban design skills
  • Experience, qualifications and achievement in landscape architecture, urban design or equivalent
  • Excellent written, graphic and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prepare complete landscape documentation packages from concept design to construction
  • Highly developed knowledge of community planning, experience in community engagement and understanding of communication principles in a local or state government context.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and the promotion of high quality outcomes for the public realm
  • Up to date with current trends, issues and theory affecting urban design, public open space and recreation.
