  • An attractive total remuneration package within the range of $203,386 to $225,329 per annum will be negotiated.

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) is an executive agency of the New South Wales State Government. Embodying the best of design ingenuity and innovation, the Museum profiles one of the world’s great collections and is a highly successful interdisciplinary institution that sits at the intersection of the arts, design, science and technology and plays a critical role in supporting the brand and vision of the city. Access to the Museum’s exceptional collection is a cornerstone of the vision, opening up opportunities for engagement, participation and research.

MAAS currently operates three sites, the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, Sydney Observatory in Millers Point and Museums Discovery Centre in Castle Hill. In April 2018, the NSW Government announced the largest investment in museum infrastructure in Australia’s history, which will enable MAAS to expand its operations, and will ensure the Museum and its collection remain a critical part of our local and global communities for centuries to come.

A new, world-class flagship MAAS campus will be built in Parramatta, opening in 2023, and the Museums Discovery Centre will be expanded by 35%. Further planning is also underway for cultural spaces at Ultimo, which include a MAAS-led design and fashion museum.

The opportunity

As the Director of Communications & External Affairs, you will direct strategies for driving recognition of the MAAS brand both nationally and internationally. As a member of the museum’s Executive Team, you will be accountable for the strategic direction of the Museum regarding all facets of communication, development and strategic partnerships.

Bringing a solid track record of strategic experience in communications, you will manage and inspire your team by achieving results. You will consult with key stakeholders including Government, media and community, to develop and manage effective communications, fundraising, development and partnerships.

To be successful in this role you will be required to possess the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • Significant experience in managing reputation and stakeholder support in a cultural or allied environment. 
  • Significant and strategic experience in driving marketing and communications strategies and achieving and analysing results. 
  • Demonstrated success in driving fundraising strategy and achieving results across corporate support, philanthropy and giving and grants. 
  • Superior networking skills and experience in managing Trustees, Government and key stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated success in embedding an audience/customer centric approach to decision making. 
  • Track record in managing results focussed multidisciplinary teams 
  • Excellent business development skills and financial acumen.
