We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Planner / Statutory Assessment Planner to work as part of a Development Assessment team in the implementation of departmental responsibilities in the area of development assessment and planning.

In this role you will contribute to the overall effective operation of the Planning and Environmental Division and implement Council’s policies in relation to the protection, preservation and enhancement of the natural and built environment.

What are the duties and tasks of the position?

  • Assess development applications, complying development applications, pre lodgement applications, subdivision certificates and determine those applications and certificates within the limitations of the delegations of authority relevant to the position, including more complex applications.
  • Make site inspections as required and provide advice for the preparation of planning and development assessment reports.
  • Refer and document any illegal and unauthorised land uses and other breaches of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.
  • Prepare high quality reports to the Development Assessment Unit and Council on development applications including the preparation of appropriate conditions of consent.
  • Assist Compliance Unit with advice when required in the Issue of Orders and Notices.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the Land and Environment Court practices and procedures.
  • Meet with objectors and where appropriate, mediate a satisfactory planning outcome between applicants and the community.
  • Provide high level technical advice to the public, management and Council on a comprehensive range of planning matters.
  • When required check and sign planning certificates under section 149 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.
  • Ensure familiarity with current planning and development assessment practice, technical and statutory requirements and provisions.

Selection Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in town planning, environmental planning or equivalent discipline.
  • Have practical experience in development assessment under the New South Wales Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and Regulations or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Superior ability to resolve issues with customers both internal and external in an amicable fashion and in accordance with Council’s policies and staff delegations.
  • Ability to contribute to a team environment.
  • Class C Drivers License.
  • Demonstrated ability to review policies and procedures relevant to assessment and regulatory / enforcement activity.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with the Building Code of Australia and the Australian Standards for Parking and Disabled Access.
  • Knowledge and experience of Land and Environment Court and / or Local Court practice and procedures and in the preparation of evidence.
