The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is one of the world's largest, and most highly regarded community based emergency services organisations. We respond to fire and other emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whilst our firefighters are the cornerstone of CFA services, what goes on behind the scenes is just as important in helping to protect lives and property.

The Manager Research and Development is responsible for the leadership and management of all Research and Development activities and projects to enhance both incident control and emergency management across CFA.

They will work closely with other agencies and stakeholders to ensure management of partnerships, activities and projects conducted by research organisations including but not limited to Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre, CSIRO and University of Melbourne. In conjunction with this they will be developing and maintaining strong working relationships with other emergency services, government agencies, industry, universities and community-based organizations.

They will provide authoritative advice to Chief Officer, Deputy Chief Officer - Bushfire, SDLT and Executives on bushfire research related matters this includes providing research reports which they present to senior leaders in CFA and externally when required.  

The successful applicant will have:

  • Tertiary degree in Science, Quality Assurance, Research & Development or Business Management related. Related post graduate degree desirable.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of fire science and fire behaviour.
  • Sound understanding of project management principles and demonstrated ability to successfully plan for and deliver projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with the management and delivery of science related research and development, with a strong understanding of research methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence key stakeholders; combined with the ability to develop and manage professional partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare research reports and present research results with credibility in professional forums.
  • Understanding of CFA operations processes, procedures, brigade structure and functions would be an advantage.
