The Position

CSIRO offers PhD graduates an opportunity to launch their scientific careers through our Postdoctoral Fellowships. These fellowships provide experience that will enhance career prospects and facilitate the development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

The successful fellow will be based at CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere in Hobart in the Decadal Climate Forecast Project and will work closely with colleagues in CSIRO Land & Water in Brisbane and Agriculture & Food.

You will be part of a larger community of postdocs in the Decadal Climate Forecast Project and across the CSIRO Digiscape Future Science Platform, and will have access to a hierarchy of climate, hydrological, and crop models. Together you will examine how climate extremes impact water and agricultural systems, and how these extremes are characterised in climate forecast models.

Owing to the terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant full time postdoctoral experience.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Characterise critical climate extremes, assess their underlying mechanisms and forecast skill.
  • Assess climate risk and decisions impacted by climate extremes.

Salary: AU$80K - AU$91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as science, engineering, mathematics, or statistics.
  • Experience analysing and interpreting geophysical datasets.
  • Proven sound knowledge of statistics.
