The QRIC provides an intelligence, investigation, educative, scientific and technical investigations and regulatory compliance framework aimed at ensuring the integrity of all persons involved with the Queensland racing industry; safeguarding the welfare of all animals involved in racing; and maintaining public confidence in the racing of animals in Queensland. Its purpose extends to assessing and issuing of licences related to animals and participants that are suitable to be licensed for a code of racing.

 

Role Responsibility and Accountabilities

 

The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Canine Health Officer reports to the GAP Operations Manager.

 

This position manages and monitors the health of greyhounds within the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) in south-east Queensland. The position is responsible for the efficient management of the GAP’s dedicated veterinary clinic and the provision of veterinary nursing during surgeries. Knowledge of and proficiency in surgical, anaesthetic and monitoring equipment and techniques is a prerequisite.  The position is responsible for the day-to-day administration and monitoring of medication and preventative treatments of GAP dogs in consultation with the GAP’s veterinary officers.

 

The role includes scheduling appointments with, and transporting dogs to and from off-site veterinarians as required and close monitoring of all health issues identified.

 

General duties will include feeding, exercising of GAP dogs and cleaning kennels.

The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Canine Health Officer will:

 

  • Work collaboratively with all GAP Officers and QRIC staff to develop and implement strategies to improve the GAP’s operations and visibility.
  • Conduct basic health assessments of all greyhounds entering the program.
  • Liaise with QRIC and independent veterinarians to schedule elective and emergency veterinary services.
  • Provide the first point of contact for routine health issues of all GAP greyhounds.
  • Work collaboratively with the GAP Foster Placement Officer to ensure that dogs in foster care receive appropriate care and treatment.
  • Assist the Assessment and Adoptions Officer with behavioural assessments of greyhounds as required.
  • In collaboration with the Assessment and Adoptions Officer, work proactively with all greyhounds available for adoption to ensure that positive behaviours are established and maintained through continuous daily handling, exposure, enrichment and training.
  • Maintain current and accurate veterinary records of all dogs and assist with the maintenance of all records for dogs within the program.
  • Assist in kennel and dog husbandry duties as required, including feeding and exercising dogs and cleaning kennels.
  • Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements, GAP and QRIC policies and procedures.
  • Support productive, professional relationships with all GAP staff, volunteers, foster carers, adoptive families, key stakeholders and QRIC licensees.
  • Communicate extensively with the GAP team, adopting a group consultative and problem solving approach to identify work priorities and establish best work practice.
  • Participate in Public Relations and Marketing events as required.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the GAP Operations Manager.
  • Ensure all non-compliance issues are reported promptly in accordance with QRIC requirements.
  • Contribute to the safety culture of QRIC by reporting all incidents and hazards and ensuring work is undertaken in the safest way possible, following all WHS legislation, policies/procedures and guidelines relevant to the job.
  • Demonstrate ethical behaviour and integrity as required by the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994.
