About us

 

The Department of Justice provides an effective justice system by delivering programs and services which contribute to building safe communities and the protection of rights.

 

The Office of the General Counsel supports the Department of Justice across the full range of Department operations, with diverse clients such as the Office of Emergency Management, Corrective Services NSW, Veterans Affairs and Juvenile Justice. The Office of the General Counsel has four practice groups: Commercial & Transactional, Inquests Inquiries and Representation, Litigation and Public Law, and Open Government Information and Privacy, which cover a broad range of commercial and public law matters.

 

About the role

 

You will be responsible for providing high level professional legal advice, support and research to contribute to efficient and effective legal services within our Litigation & Public Law (LPL) team.

 

The LPL team deals with a wide range of areas which include:

 

·    Consideration and processing of various legal applications.

·    Providing legal advice to various areas of the Department on criminal, tort and civil/administrative law matters. 

·    Management of litigated proceedings relating to various criminal, tort and civil/administrative law matters. 

 

As a Solicitor within the LPL team you will be making a valued contribution managing complex or contentious cases and other activities and providing high-level advice to various stakeholders in accordance with legislation and policy. You would also be responsible for conducting litigation as the Department’s representative.

 

About you

 

You will be a highly organised Solicitor with strong research and preparation skills. You will also have outstanding written and verbal communication skills to provide efficient and effective legal and/or litigation, services to clients and staff. Your ability to problem solve and manage simultaneous issues is vital to the success of the role.

Essential requirements for this role

·    Legal Qualifications, with a practicing certificate and knowledge and experience in the relevant area of law.

·    Current and valid Working with Children Check Clearance.

·    Ability to undertake travel for regional court and other commitments subject to the application of any discrimination legislation (including in respect of carer’s responsibilities).
