The Department’s two related agencies - the Office of Environment & Heritage and the Office of Local Government - support the conservation and protection of the environment and an effective local government sector in NSW. Several other entities associated with the Department include the Environment Protection Authority, statutory trusts responsible for zoos, parks and gardens, independent assessment and planning bodies, and development corporations.

 

About the Role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Planning Policy Officer to join the Employment Policy and Systems team within the Department of Planning & Environment.

 

The successful candidate will work in a supportive environment that is highly collaborative, multidisciplinary, fast paced and innovative. The Planning Policy Officer will report to the Team Leader to develop and deliver policy projects to achieve the Department’s planned outcomes aligned to broader Government planning system objectives.

 

The Employment Policy and Systems team’s responsibilities are wide ranging and include developing a new NSW Retail Strategy, implementing child care policy and addressing systemic planning issues to support the Aboriginal Community Land and Infrastructure Program.

 

We are looking for highly motivated individuals who are true collaborators and problem solvers. Being able to successfully deliver multiple projects and policy issues whilst dealing with competing priorities are key to this role.


Primary purpose of the role

The Planning Policy Officer undertakes research, contributes to policy development and provides evidence-based policy analysis and advice to develop high quality planning policy.

 

Essential requirements:

  • Degree in planning or a relevant discipline
  • Knowledge of the Environment Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and other legislation related to land use and environmental planning in NSW

To be successful in the role, ideally you can:

  • Identify, undertake research, analyse and evaluate issues and data to form appropriate responses and options to resolve new and emerging issues.
  • Prepare easy to understand plain English reports, guidelines, briefing notes and correspondence to address issues or respond to information requests.
  • Provide advice on new policies and make recommendations for improvements to existing policy following analysis of issues.
