Port Augusta City Council is located at the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia and includes Stirling North and the seaside homes located at Commissariat Point, Blanche Harbor and Miranda and has a population of almost 14,000 people. Councils missions is to create and sustain a safe and vibrant Community where people want to live, work, play and visit. With access to excellent health, education, housing and support services the City of Port Augusta leads the way in living sustainably in an arid environment and in developing alternative energy infrastructure.


Reporting to the CEO, this is an executive leadership role within the organisation and is responsible for the strategic management and provision of services to Council and the community. Following a recent retirement, this portfolio is currently highly engaged and well managed. Your role will be to continue to provide leadership, strategic direction, advice and support to the CEO regarding management of Council’s policies and systems.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide policy and strategic advice to Executive Management Team and council relating to Work Health and Safety and Risk, Governance, Records, Contracts & Events, Library & Cultural Centre, General Inspectorate and the Community harmony departments
  • Ensure the development of Council’s Strategic Plan by fostering a strong focus on economic development facilitation
  • Implementation and maintenance of systems and programs to ensure compliance with legislative provisions
  • Ensure that appropriate risk management strategies are implemented to identify and mitigate risks in accordance with corporate requirements
  • Foster innovation and a culture of continuous improvement

Your key competencies will include:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead at a senior level, manage and develop people in order to manage work and resources across a range of complex projects and in a manner that supports professional development
  • High level of understanding of local governments’ role in supporting communities
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and implement controls with respect to relevant legislation, industry standards, Codes of Practice and industry driver impacting on financial governance, planning, and performance and reporting requirements
  • Well versed in developing and leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Developing and Implementing strategic plans, policies and reporting systems
  • Tertiary qualifications in a related disciple

This position requires an experienced leader with a commitment to internal and external customers through their ability to build positive relationships and experience delivering multiple and complex projects, services and programs for a similar sized organisation.
