MHDA Statement of Intention
The intention of the NSLHD MHDA is to provide recovery-oriented, trauma informed services that are guided by evidence based practices and collaboration.

The Registered Nurse (RN) within Mental Health Drug and Alcohol (MHDA) Services leads and supports quality patient health outcomes with a focus of recovery across a range of health care settings. The RN assumes a leadership role within the nursing team supporting, coaching and leading nursing staff including Enrolled Nurses (EN) and Assistants in Nursing (AIN). The RN plans, implements and evaluates specific mental health nursing care activities that support the multidisciplinary health care team and ensures safe practice within adopted models of care.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the recruitment of a dedicated, enthusiastic and hardworking mental health registered nurse in the Mental Health Intensive Care Unit (MHICU) at Hornsby Hospital. 


This is a permanent full-time position. The MHICU is a specialist 12-bed tertiary referral unit with a focus on high quality evidence-based intensive care management of mental health consumers. This exciting role offers the successful applicant the opportunity to work in a low conflict, high therapy model of care with a low staff to consumer ratio. 


The position requires strong leadership skills and team work with a focus on recovery orientated practice. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent risk management and conflict resolution skills. Specialist training in the prevention and management of violence and aggression will be provided. A strong leadership group of clinical nurse specialists will also be available for ongoing mentorship and support.
 
You will be joining a service where team work is a priority. You will have the opportunity to work with an experienced and dynamic recovery-orientated team focusing on complex and challenging mental health consumers. Clinical supervision is supported and protected time available to participate in clinical supervision, educational activities and quality improvement projects. 


You will have the opportunity to engage with other mental health specialties on campus including child and adolescent community & In-patient mental health services, adult community and In-patient mental health services, and SMHSOPS services.

What you'll be doing


Employees must abide by the NSW Health Code of Conduct. Criminal record checks will be undertaken on successful applicants and applicants for positions designated as Category A will be required to obtain required vaccinations prior to commencing employment. 

 

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:


  1. Registered Nurse – Division 1 with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  2. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  3. Current mental health, drug and alcohol clinical knowledge and clinical problem solving ability.
  4. A commitment to excellence in mental health nursing practice and continuing professional development.
  5. Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
  6. An understanding of the professional, ethical and legal requirements of the Registered Nurse.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of information technology systems.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of information technology systems and experience in managing acute complex and challenging clinical behaviours within a consumer centred, recovery focused framework.
