The Team Leader, Work Health and Safety role incorporates a diverse and exciting range of responsibilities that support our employees in meeting their WHS legislative obligations and strives to embed a culture of safety and wellbeing at Geoscience Australia.

As a member of the Wellbeing and Performance team, they have a coordination role in the application of WHS principles to ensure compliance with legislative responsibilities including the management of risk assessments, incident and injury reporting, compliance reporting and high frequency consultation and communication. 

The Team Leader, Work Health and Safety plays an active role in the establishment of the WHS system, including the development of relevant policy and procedures to assist in embedding a safe work culture within the organisation. The role is responsible for the development and implementation of educational initiatives to assist employees and managers in meeting their legislative obligations including the development of due diligence tools, awareness of organisational risks and incident trends and expert advice when required. They assist in the delivery of strategic initiatives for Enabling Services and contribute to the management and monitoring of new systems within Geoscience Australia, including the Work health and Safety and Rehabilitation Management Systems.

In this role you will:

  • Work independently or under limited guidance providing high level, complex advice and assistance to managers and employees, consistent with legislation and relevant internal policy and procedures on WHS matters.
  • Assist in the establishment and design of the work health and safety system including policy and procedure development, and identification of strategic priorities to embed a positive WHS culture within Geoscience Australia.
  • Identify, develop and promote capability requirements and tools to assist employees and managers to meet legislative obligations including exercising due diligence.
  • Undertake regular analysis of WHS data, including effectiveness of the WHS system, internal controls and directions and provide recommendations for enhancements based on effective interpretation and application of WHS legislation.
  • Apply knowledge and expertise for effective and timely management of Work Health and Safety risks and treatments including conducting incident investigations and engaging external service providers to achieve a safe workplace.
  • Coordinate and manage WHS networks and programs including corporate citizens and work group inspections
  • Supervise, coach and mentor members of the Wellbeing & Performance team, identifying development needs required to undertake their roles
  • Build and manage productive and effective partnerships that engage both internal and external stakeholders in understanding issues, identifying innovative potential solutions and in supporting implementation.  This includes developing trust and confidence, managing networks and relationships and managing difficulties to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Exercise judgement to make decisions governed by the application of legislation, best practice principles and policies and procedures with the support and guidance of the management team.
  • Prepare a range of correspondence including briefs, reports and communication to stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member
  • Demonstrate sound research, consultation and analytical skills to contribute to the development of programs, policies, procedures and educational materials to support ongoing business improvements.

To Be successful in the role you will:

  • Have relevant qualifications and/or experience in WHS.
  • Possess and demonstrate a thorough understanding of relevant legislation, policy and procedures including the Safety Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988, Public Service Act 1999 and Work Health & Safety Act 2012.
  • Possess excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Exemplify professional presentation including high integrity, respect, drive and resilience.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continual professional development by participation in the RCM Capability Framework and delivery of best practice based service provision.
  • Be pragmatic, open-minded and practical
