About the Position

Provide professional support, in the development of the City in accordance with current town planning, environmental principals and guidelines to ensure that the general public, developers, consultants and Council personnel are fully advised of, and comply with, the requirements of the Corporate Plan, Planning Scheme, relevant Acts, Council by-laws and policies. We currently have three positions available within our City Planning branch:

  • Permanent Senior Planner in Central Assessment
  • Temporary Senior Planner in Central Assessment available until June 2019
  • Temporary Senior Planner in Major Assessment available until June 2019

Key position responsibilities

  • Assess applications for Material Change of Use (MCU) and Reconfiguration of Lots (ROL) and Siting Variation development and associated applications in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Prepare documentation relating to town planning appeals and provide professional advice to support that documentation if required.
  • Prepare and present complex planning reports, detailing the assessment of a wide range of land use development applications against Council’s Planning Scheme, policies and guidelines, environmental objectives and relevant legislation, to enable informed decision-making.
  • Educate and represent the Council’s view of “good design” and “quality outcomes” in conjunction with Strategic & Environmental Planning.
  • Provide professional support to the Supervising Town Planners and provide mentoring and knowledge sharing to other planners within the section.
  • Support extensive planning assessment projects and programs to deliver desired outcomes in alignment with the City’s growth and it’s vision
  • Provide a high level of customer service ensuring prompt response/s to written and verbal requests from clients, stakeholders and legal representatives.

About you

  • Highly developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including:
    • negotiation skills
    • the ability to present and articulate complex/technical matters (including education)
    • ability to write executive management/complex reports
  • Proven ability to mentor and motivate others, foster professional development and transfer knowledge and manage/monitor performance
  • The ability to work collaboratively and productively within a multi-disciplinary team environment and foster good relationships with employees and clients.
  • Appropriate range of analytical, problem solving and investigative skills/techniques
  • The ability to exercise initiative and judgement, and be innovative when dealing with non-routine matters
  • Extensive project, time management and organisational skills with proven ability to lead and/or participate in multifunctional projects/activities
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of relevant State Government legislation, Council Planning Scheme and local laws, including a sound understanding of Council policies highly desirable
  • Bachelor Degree of Urban and Regional Planning or equivalent knowledge
