About North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP)

NQBP is looking for a Marine Pilot to join its Mackay based team.

NQBP is one of Australia's largest port authorities by tonnage throughput.  More than half of Queensland's trade by tonnage passes through its ports of Weipa, Abbot Point, Mackay and Hay Point.  The NQBP Marine Pilots provide port pilotage in the ports of Mackay and Hay Point.

The Role

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and motivated Marine Pilot to join NQBP's pilotage service.  Reporting to the Manager Pilotage Services, some of the key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Undertake training to gain and progress a valid pilot's licence and area endorsements so as to meet the operational demands of the region;
  • Conduct safe and efficient pilotage of vessels in regional ports through a high level of ship handling skill, local port knowledge and general maritime expertise;
  • Undertake safety training, including updating and familiarisation of ports and marine emergency training;
  • Liaise with ships' masters, operators, agents, port authorities, regulatory bodies and providers of marine safety services concerning shipping;
  • Use computer technology as it relates to the effective delivery of pilotage services;
  • Assist in the overall task of port pilotage management, including completion of appropriate documentation and logs in a timely manner;
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to understanding and complying with NQBP's workplace health and safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Promote and contribute to teamwork, knowledge and skill sharing; and
  • Seek to provide a quality, cost-effective and customer focused delivery of service.

Skills and Experience

To be considered you must hold a valid unrestricted Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency or Master Unlimited Certificate recognised by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA); a valid Queensland driver's licence (or equivalent) and be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience as a competent master mariner ideally with ship handling experience as Master or Pilot; and knowledge of the regulatory framework pertaining to Pilotage in Queensland;
  • Ability to utilise Microsoft Office programs, including Word and Outlook;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate professionally to a wide range of internal and external clients, both verbally and in writing; and
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, resolve conflict and participate equitably in positive and successful teams.

Special Role Requirements

Marine Pilots are available for work 24 hours per day whilst on their designated pilotage roster (currently 7 days on, 7 days off). Marine Pilot working hours are regulated by a Fatigue Risk Management System.

In accordance with Marine legislation, Marine Pilots need to hold a current certificate of medical fitness whilst undertaking duty.

To be eligible for a permanent role, applicants must provide proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency.

Remuneration

The role is remunerated as per the North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation Marine Pilots Enterprise Agreement 2014.
