The QRIC provides an intelligence, investigation, educative, scientific and technical investigations and regulatory compliance framework aimed at ensuring the integrity of all persons involved with the Queensland racing industry; safeguarding the welfare of all animals involved in racing; and maintaining public confidence in the racing of animals in Queensland. Its purpose extends to assessing and issuing of licences related to animals and participants that are suitable to be licensed for a code of racing.

 

Role Responsibility and Accountabilities

The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Officer (Kennel Operations) reports to the GAP Coordinator (Townsville).

 

The purpose of this position is to provide support to the GAP Coordinator (Townsville) and to ensure the delivery of consistently safe and quality handling and husbandry to GAP greyhounds. The GAP Officer (Kennel Operations) will use the correct, positive-canine handling approaches and maintain the safety, health and welfare of dogs at the facility.

 

The GAP Officer (Kennel Operations) will work collaboratively with all GAP employees and stakeholders to enhance GAP’s functionality as a high quality animal welfare entity and to raise its visibility in the community.  As the kennels operate on a shift system, shift work will be necessary.

 

  • Maintain a safe, hygienic and ethical kennel facility and oversee the excellent care of the greyhounds on site.
  • Work collaboratively with the GAP staff and GAP Operations Manager to develop and continuously review and implement strategies to improve the GAP’s operations and visibility.
  • Deliver and administrate GAP kennel program requirements for the GAP greyhounds including but not limited to:
  • Employ best practice dog handling skills to ensure consistency of handling and care.
  • Manage excellent standards of hygiene and order within the GAP kennels area and extended property.
  • Ensure that the requirements of all greyhounds on site are met in regards to accommodation, exercise, feeding and social enrichment.
  • Assist with the continuance of environmental enrichment for the GAP greyhounds.
  • Ensure that all veterinary and/or behavioural issues are immediately reported, recorded and addressed by the appropriate officers.
  • Maintain accurate records and produce reports as required.
  • Participate in volunteer training programs to teach basic dog handling skills.
  • Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements.
  • Support productive, professional relationships with all GAP staff, foster carers, adopting families, and key stakeholders including racing industry participants and QRIC licensees and staff.
  • Communicate extensively with the GAP team, adopting a group consultative and problem solving approach to identify work priorities and establish best work practice.
  • Participate in Public Relations and Marketing events as required.
  • Work rostered shifts as required.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the GAP Coordinator (Townsville) and the GAP Operations Manager.
  • Ensure that all non-compliance issues are reported promptly in accordance with QRIC requirements.
  • Contribute to the safety culture of QRIC by reporting all incidents and hazards, including those involving dog behaviour and/or handling, and ensuring that all work is undertaken in the safest way possible, following all WHS legislation, policies/procedures and guidelines relevant to the job.
  • Demonstrate ethical behaviour and integrity as required by the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994.
