Introducing Rivergum

The Rivergum Residential Treatment Centre (Rivergum) is a new facility that will deliver short-term, intensive treatment and interventions for up to 20 offenders on supervision orders. It is a secure, therapeutic environment and forms part of Victoria's Post Sentence Detention and Supervision Scheme – a civil, non-punitive scheme which has been in operation since 2005. Offenders subject to a supervision order are not undergoing a sentence and are not in custody.

Located near the rural town of Ararat, Rivergum will have a strong focus on building collaborative relationships that both motivate and hold residents accountable for their actions. Residents will be supported in continuing their rehabilitation through the delivery of intensive treatment and interventions, provided by a multi-disciplinary team made up of clinicians, case workers, case managers, activities coordinators and more.

The facility is operated by the Department of Justice and Regulation, which is one arm of the Victorian State Government, a recognised top employer of choice nationally. All of our staff work to the vision of a safe, just, innovative and thriving Victoria.

About the role

As Rivergum's occupational therapist, you will help promote an intensive case management approach to rehabilitation. You will form part of a small, multidisciplinary clinical team, which will be responsible for providing a range of interventions to the sexual and violent offenders residing at Rivergum.

You will work with the clinical services manager, who will also be your direct report, to lead and develop a culture where the therapeutic focus of the centre is upheld. You will also work closely with senior clinicians at Rivergum and other senior clinicians within the Specialised Offender Assessment and Treatment Service (SOATS), who will provide clinical oversight of the interventions delivered at Rivergum.

What you will do

As the occupational therapist at Rivergum, you will:

  • Assist residents to prepare for transition back into the community. This will involve facilitating interventions that enhance the independence of residents in everyday activities, and promote strategies for emotional management.
  • Work collaboratively and impartially with patients to identify occupational therapy treatment priorities.
  • Provide clinical advice to Rivergum case management staff. Your focus is on creating and maintaining a therapeutic environment, where natural and legitimate decision-making, choice, adaptive functional behaviour and independent living can be practised.
  • Actively participate in meetings regarding the management of residents at Rivergum, including quarterly reviews with senior stakeholders.

Values and skills you should have

This is a job that demands a candidate with integrity. You should be capable of earning and keeping the genuine trust of others. You will respect the importance of your role in the public service, and always behave in a fair and ethical manner. Further, you will be someone who flourishes when working in a team, and be open to other perspectives while still remaining accountable for your own work.

Resilience is also essential – you will encounter setbacks, but you will need to be able to persevere and remain committed to Rivergum's objectives.

Additionally, you should specialise in:

  • Interpersonal skills – build strong relationships and develop an understanding of others in order to motivate them and confidently address conflict situations.
  • Problem solving – develop operational responses to recurring issues based on knowledge and expertise.
  • Verbal communication – build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and confidently argue complex concepts, negotiating with tact and diplomacy on difficult issues
  • Written communication – produce a range of complex technical reports with evidence-based recommendations on relevant issues.
  • Planning and organising – plan complex case programs aligned with business objectives, identifying and securing resource requirements, and anticipating and addressing any barriers.

What's in it for you

The major reward of taking on this important role will be seeing the positive impact of your hard work up-close. You will be joining Rivergum at its birth, and will influence the path this exciting new facility will take.

There are many other advantages in working for the Department of Justice at large, as well, including:

  • A fair salary – enjoy great work conditions and salary sacrificing options.
  • Transparent performance framework - approach your work with confidence in how you're tracking.
  • Generous leave entitlements – including provisions for many forms of leave; including personal, parental, carers, study, cultural, compassionate and sick leave.
  • Savings on private health insurance
  • Visa sponsorship assistance and/or relocation allowance for eligible interstate and overseas candidates.
  • Employee Assistance Program support – you are encouraged to use this short-term, confidential counselling service if you're experiencing      emotional stress, relationship problems, conflict with others or personal issues
  • The social club – option to join this lively group, which gives you access to discounted gift cards, films, travel and online shopping.
