Department of Home Affairs
APS6 – Facial Image Comparison Specialist
The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia's national and transport security, federal law enforcement, criminal justice, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.
The Department of Home Affairs includes the entirety of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It also includes national security, emergency management and criminal justice functions from the Attorney-General's Department; the Office of Transport Security from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development; multicultural affairs from the Department of Social Services; and the counter-terrorism coordination and cyber security policy functions from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
About the Role:
Duties may include:
- examine a range of referred facial images, formulate preliminary and/or expert opinion(s), document findings, and draft reports;
- conduct quality assurance, including technical and administrative reviews, on casework undertaken by other Facial Image Comparison specialists in line with national and international standards and procedures;
- deliver training on Facial Image Comparison (both onshore and offshore);
- maintain case management system records;
- produce statements for court, and attend court as an expert witness as required;
- at certain classifications, manage the Facial Image Comparison Unit, produce high-level performance reports and conduct tours of facilities;
- process biometric match returns generated via the departments Biometric Acquisition System (BAMS); and
- build and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with other relevant government and external agencies.
Our Ideal Candidate:
Highly Desirable
- A forensic qualification from a registered training organisation and experience in a forensic comparative discipline, such as but not limited to Facial Image Comparison, Document Examination, Fingerprint Examination, Toolmarks, Digital Imaging Evidence.
- Applicants with a physical comparison background may substitute a tertiary qualification by demonstrated equivalent technical skills, completion of an internal training program and experience.
Desirable
- Certificate IV Biometric Technologies. Successful applicants without this qualification will be required to attain it within 2 years
- Certificate IV Training and Assessment. Successful applicants without this qualification will be required to attain it within 2 years.
Eligibility
To be eligible to work with the Department of Home Affairs you must:
- Be an Australian Citizen;
- Obtain and maintain the required AGSVA clearance;
- Obtain and maintain a current Employment Suitability Clearance;
- Undergo a health assessment (if applicable)
