About Us
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Branch is responsible for driving evidence-based strategies across the Department of Health to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This involves providing strategic advice to the Minister, Director-General and Deputy Director-General, undertaking high-level negotiations with the 16 Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander non-government organisations about effective ways to respond to unmet health needs and service delivery gaps.  In addition, the Branch is responsible for managing over $60 million in evidence-based targeted investment across the health system on an annual basis.

The role:
The Senior Policy and Planning Officer will contribute to policy and planning processes aimed at improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  The role will implement, design and monitor Indigenous health projects to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland.  This role will undertake performance management, review and analysis of existing Indigenous health investment in Hospital and Health Services and non-government organisations, to ensure alignment with the Making Tracks towards closing the gap in health outcomes for Indigenous Queenslanders by 2033: Investment Strategy 2015 – 2018 (the Making Tracks Investment Strategy 2015–2018).  The role is also required to develop policy documents (or components to influence new models of health service delivery and achieve government priorities), assist with policy projects, and prepare briefing documents, submissions, correspondence and reports.

The successful person:
To be considered for this role, you will have previous experience in policy development within a complex service delivery environment and demonstrate a good understanding of historical and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and subsequent health impacts.  You will demonstrate knowledge of the Council of Australian Government Indigenous health reform agenda, and national and state policy frameworks related to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, or the ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge based on previous demonstrated work experience. You will also demonstrate strong critical analysis skills including the ability to interpret data and information to underpin strategy and policy development in health and other intersecting portfolios.  Strong verbal and written communication skills are required including the ability to produce policy-related reports, including Ministerial and Departmental briefings, reports and document drafting.  Ideally, you should also demonstrate the ability to engage appropriately with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.

Benefits of working with the Department of Health
