The Cadet Program

Our Cadet Program provides university students the opportunity to gain practical paid work experience in their discipline area. You will be able to increase your business knowledge and develop your professional network as well as be involved in  a unique learning experience.

What does the Cadet Program offer? 

  • The Cadet Program duration will range between 12 – 24 months (whilst you study full time) depending on when you are due to graduate
  • Cadets are required to attend university full time whilst working part-time for a minimum of 14 hours per week during semester
  • During semester break, Cadets are required to work full time for a minimum of 35 hours per week
  • Flexibility and support through flexible working hours to ensure completion of your degree whilst juggling work commitments (we want you to succeed!)
  • Structured and job specific training plus opportunities to develop your skills and capabilities (in fact, 93% of Cadets surveyed agreed that they are able to access the right learning and development opportunities with Transport for NSW)
  • Competitive award salary (Transport Grade 1 $51,666 - $56,833 pro rata) plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading as per current award conditions
  • The opportunity to be a part of the Young Professionals Network (YPN) and engage with senior leaders, attend forums and events and share innovative ideas.

Transport for NSW has Cadet opportunities in the Sydney Metropolitan Region and NSW regional areas in a variety of Engineering and Environment disciplines. Cadet positions are available in:

  • Sydney Metropolitan
  • NSW – Northern Region (Grafton, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Ballina and surrounding areas)
  • NSW – Southern Western Region (Wagga Wagga, Yass, Holbrook, Narrandera, Hay and surrounding areas)
  • NSW – Southern Region (Mittagong, Bomaderry, Bega, Cooma, Wollongong and surrounding areas)
  • NSW – Western Region (Parkes, Orange, Lithgow, Dubbo, Bathurst, Broken Hill and surrounding suburbs) 

Disciplines include, but are not limited to: 

  • Civil
  • Mechanical
  • Mechatronics
  • Electrical
  • Environmental (Engineering and Science)
  • Geotechnical
  • Surveying
  • Structural
  • Construction Management

We’re looking forward to welcoming some fresh faces on-board and one of these could be you. But, before you apply for the Cadet Program, there are a few things you’ll need to check: 

  • You’re a permanent Resident or Australian / NZ citizen at time of applying
  • You must be enrolled in an undergraduate Bachelor degree with an expected graduation date between December 2019 – December 2020 (you must have a maximum of 24 months left of full time study)
  • You will be studying full-time each semester (enrolled in 75% of normal full-time study load)
