What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner works as key member of the Sexual Health multi-disciplinary team to provide flexible, holistic and culturally sensitive primary health care services, including direct clinical care, to Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people and communities to achieve better health access and outcomes. Goals are aligned with NSW Aboriginal Blood Borne Virus and Sexually Transmitted Infections Framework 2016-2021, NSW Hepatitis B Strategy 2014-2020, and NSW Hepatitis C Strategy 2014-2020. 


Selection Criteria

  1. Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1977.
  2. Hold a minimum Certificate IV Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice) and current AHPRA Registration as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner or willingness to obtain same within an agreed timeframe.
  3. Understanding of the following factors and how they influence Aboriginal people, their cultural understanding of health issues and their health outcomes- Australian history, socio economic influences, the complexities associated with Sexual Health, HIV, and Blood Borne Viruses (BBV’s). 
  4. Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team and effectively communicate and collaborate with others, including Aboriginal people and communities.
  5. Demonstrated capacity to plan, deliver, document and evaluate clinical care of Sexual Health, Hepatitis and Needle Syringe Program (NSP) services and refer when necessary.
  6. Demonstrated capacity to plan, develop, deliver, document and evaluate health promotion and education initiatives for Sexual Health, HIV, BBV’s and NSP within the framework of harm minimisation strategies and the ability to use computer programs, as required within this process.
  7. Ability to advocate and promote sexual health, HIV, BBV and NSP services to individuals and communities of the LHD.
  8. Current NSW Drivers Licence and the ability to travel within the local area and throughout Western NSW LHD (as necessary).
