The Department of Human Services delivers social, health and other services to individuals, families, communities, businesses and healthcare providers.

Media Advisers enhance and protect the department's reputation. Working as part of a team, Media Advisers have an in-depth knowledge of the media and apply their specialist expertise to guide the department's media presence in line with business objectives.

They are expected to confidently engage with the media and internal stakeholders. They work under the limited direction of senior staff, exercising both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. Decision-making is substantially dependent on specialist judgement, skills and knowledge.

Key duties may include:

  • Deliver effective media communication and produce high-quality media content and adhere to deadlines
  • Undertake media monitoring, including the timely provision of reports
  • Develop and support stakeholder relationships, particularly with media organisations and journalists, including negotiating outcomes and making sound professional media management judgements
  • Research risks and opportunities to develop, implement and evaluate media content, strategies and products
  • Prepare, brief and advise spokespeople
  • Proof and edit content.

Mandatory qualifications:

A relevant degree or diploma with a major in journalism, communications or public relations. Alternatively, possession of equivalent cadetship and/or specialist experience in corporate media management or journalism.

Security clearance:

The successful candidate will be required to currently hold or be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
