The Position

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic tradesperson to join the Fabrication Workshop team. In this key role, you will be helping CSIRO scientists meet their research objectives by producing creative and cost effective sheet metal solutions. This may include fabricating frames, benches and glove boxes.

CSIRO Business & Infrastructure Services (CBIS) provides support to scientific staff by developing, maintaining and managing the buildings, laboratories and other research infrastructure across CSIRO owned and leased sites.  CBIS manages and operates specialist engineering machine and fabrication centres including a workshop at Clayton. This facility provides many services to a broad range of CSIRO scientific and research projects. 

Your duties will include:

  • Supporting the activities of the Clayton Engineering Facility by the provision of services in the area of sheet metal fabrication.
  • Liaising with scientific staff to identify detailed job requirements.
  • Fabricating sheet metal and structures using workshop equipment, making appropriate selections to match client requirements.
  • Providing job progress updates and changes in cost, effort or delivery time to Workshop Operations Manager.
  • Carrying out repair and maintenance of both internal and research equipment as required.

To be successful, you will need:

  • Trades Certificate as a sheet metal and fabrication tradesperson with extensive (approx.  10+ years) equivalent experience working in a relevant workshop.
  • Demonstrated experience to perform sheet metal work using a range of materials and methodologies in a prototyping environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing hands-on fabrication, modification, measurement, troubleshooting and repair of existing sheet metal and fabricated structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to program and operate a CNC Brake Press.
  • A current Australian driver’s licence.
