The Position

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Principal Research Scientist to lead and conduct solutions-oriented coastal research. In this role you will combine fundamental with applied research to help solve problems for government, industry or broader community. You will be expected to build and maintain networks, play a lead role in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts. You will also act as Research Group Leader for Perth-based staff within the Coasts research program.

We are looking for a respected leader with ability to integrate science across a range of disciplines including ecology, oceanography, biogeochemistry, economics and earth observations. An established track record in coastal and marine research in one or more of these disciplines will ensure your success in this role, as will excellent communication skills and an ability to manage a team of 20+ staff. You will play a key role in developing projects, and experience working with end-users of research in government and/or industry is essential.

This position will be based at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre in Perth, Western Australia. The centre has outstanding facilities and is co-located with the University of Western Australia and AIMS. Travel within Australia and overseas will be required.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Engage with policymakers and regulators in government agencies and decision-makers in businesses relevant to the core business of the Coasts research program to understand their science needs and develop programs of research that will help them make evidence based decisions.
  • Work with the Coasts Research Director and other senior staff to develop a staff and equipment profile that will enhance our capacity to address the critical coastal science needs of policymakers and regulators, the business community and other stakeholders and beneficiaries.
  • Be a senior thought leader that interacts across a number of science domains, ensuring that our coastal research portfolio is well-connected to endeavours elsewhere in Oceans & Atmosphere, and CSIRO.

Location: Perth WA
Salary: *CSOF7 - AU$131K - AU$145K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

*CSOF8 - AU$157K - AU$197K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

*NB: This position is offered across two levels, the appointment level will be determined by the qualifications, skills and relevant experience of the successful candidate

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate or equivalent research experience in a relevant aspect of social-ecological economics.
  • Established reputation and credibility in a relevant discipline with evidence of effective science leadership or equivalent sector industry experience.
  • Evidence of research leadership and delivery at the scale of a research group of more than 20 staff.
