We are currently looking for a new research team member with electrical or mechanical engineering background (or similar) with experience designing and developing electronic circuits and embedded firmware. 

Primary purpose of position

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct research projects at a senior level, including fulfilling the Project Leader or Project Manager roles when/as required.

The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in the mechanical and/or electrical engineering disciplines (or mechatronics) and has 7+ years’ experience working in a mining, heavy construction, or heavy equipment manufacturing environment. This experience should be related to engineering, design, mechatronics, and utilisation of large excavation machine kinematics, systems, and machine models for equipment such as front loading cable shovels, hydraulic excavators, large wheel loaders, drag line machines, etc. This experience may have been acquired working in a mine or quarry operational environment or working for an equipment manufacturer. 

The candidate must be experienced in writing computer code and fully capable of working with C, C+, C#. Knowledge of and experience with other code such as Matlab script or python is a bonus.

A knowledge of research methodology, experiment design, and the philosophy of knowledge (Popper, Kuhn and others) would be highly regarded.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing innovative control algorithms for complex systems to meet the requirements of research projects.
  • Developing new technologies in the dig technologies area in accordance with the strategic objectives of Mining3.
  • Developing computer algorithms and source code to meet the requirements of research projects.
  • Collecting, processing and analysing field and laboratory data.
  • Setting up and testing experimental apparatus, and assisting with experimental procedures as required.
  • Documenting designs to a level sufficient to enable subsequent usage and maintenance by others.
  • Plan and manage assigned projects as required and directed by the Program Director in accordance to Mining3 policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Play a key role in driving improvements in research quality and delivery of projects.
  • Develop research opportunities where possible, through engagement with Mining3 member companies, small to medium enterprises (SME’s), original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) and other research institutions.
  • Travelling to mine sites to provide support for installation, commissioning and running of research equipment.

Qualifications

Masters level degree preferably in a mechanical or electrical engineering discipline.

Experience

  • Recent Graduates are encouraged to apply for other potential positions within Mining3.

Knowledge

  • Background in control and computer systems/software. 
  • Sound understanding of statics, dynamics, and kinematics and the ability to apply this knowledge in order to produce computer digging machine models.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming techniques.
  • Research experience – team and independent environments.
  • C#, C++ and MATLAB.

Skills and Character

  • Demonstrated high level of drive and enthusiasm and ability to motivate others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different disciplines as well as with administrative and technical staff.
  • Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • An enjoyment of, and interest in, contributing to high quality research.
