  • Track and coordinate remediation and optimisation projects within the Authorised Material Seaworthiness Delivery Organisation (AMSDO) as approved by the Class Lifecycle Engineer Officer (CLEO).
  • Conduct activities under guidance from the CLEO to support Seaworthiness, including the consolidation of AMSDO Assurance Reports, Sea Release Boards, Materiel aspects of Seaworthiness Boards and quarterly/annual AMSDO Reports.
  • Ensure Surface Combatant Group (SCGRP) processes align with the Materiel Seaworthiness Functional Master Set (MSwFMS) and are captured within Surface Combatant Group (SC GRP) Quality Management System.
  • Manage the AMSDO entities to ensure they follow processes and apply a continuous improvement to ensure Seaworthy Materiel is delivered.
  • Manage the AMSDO performance against the MSwFMS and Product Schedules (PdS) output via the Material Seaworthiness Management Plan (MSMP), reporting any deficiencies/deviances that affect Seaworthy Materiel delivery.
  • Manage adequate preparation by AMSDO entities occurs prior to Sea Release milestones, Sea Release Gate Reviews and Seaworthiness Boards.
  • Plan and coordinate documents required for AMSDO accreditation.
  • Coordinate CLEO input into the Class Seaworthiness Board and Seaworthiness Corrective Action Reports (SCARs).

Pay and Benefits

You will be paid while you undertake your training and will receive health and dental care equitable with Medicare benefits under the provisions of the Health Insurance Act 1937. As a minimum, when clinically indicated, Defence will normally fully fund the range of health services which are routinely available in the Australian public health system. Candidates may be entitled to subsidised accommodation.

Fixed Period of Appointment

Candidates will be appointed into the Naval Reserves for a period of five years. 

Period of Appointment

A Naval Reserve employment contract for Continuous Full Time Service of three (3) years will be offered.  Consideration of a two (2) year contract extension may be considered subject to Navy service requirements.

Entry Requirements

Medical and Fitness Requirement

To be appointed, you must be medically and physically fit for entry to your chosen occupation including fitness for sea service. This is partially assessed from the completion of an extensive questionnaire covering your medical history, followed by a physical examination.

The Physical Fitness Assessment may be assessed at Navy Age Specific.

Security Clearance Requirement

The Department of Defence requires all ADF entrants to obtain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance upon entry.

A process of background checks, collection of relevant information and, as required, interviews enables the Regional Security Office to make an informed assessment of an applicant’s suitability for a security clearance.

Current policy requires applicants for this particular avenue of entry to have lived in Australia for the preceding 10 years, or have a checkable background for this period. Waivers may be considered.

Citizenship Requirement

Only Australian citizens are permitted to serve in the ADF.

If you are a permanent resident of Australia, the ADF may consider a temporary waiver of the citizenship requirement if the position for which you are applying cannot be filled by an applicant who meets all of the citizenship requirements, and then only in exceptional circumstances. You will be required to then obtain Australian citizenship as early as possible following appointment.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Engineering qualification(s) and/or significant project/asset/risk management experience. Mandatory
  • Eligibility for Engineers Australia membership [Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist, or Associate Engineer]. Mandatory
  • Significant career experience/practice within a maritime industry maintenance environment, or industry roles with similar characteristics, e.g. Heavy industry maintenance operations, mining/gas/petroleum industry production operations, etc. Mandatory 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Mandatory
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills. Highly Desirable
  • Industry experience working with Asset Management Systems and Risk Management tools. Highly Desirable
  • Working knowledge of Defence Engineering, maintenance and financial policies and procedures, or ability to acquire this knowledge. Desirable
  • Ability and practical experience in the technical management of infrastructure assets. Desirable
  • Proven ability to develop and implement an asset management framework e.g ISO 55000. Desirable

Military Training

Following appointment, members will complete the RAN Mid-Career Entry Course (MCEC) at the Royal Australian Navy College, HMAS Creswell, located in Jervis Bay Territory, 180km south of Sydney and 35 km southeast of Nowra in New South Wales. This course, conducted over a period of five weeks, is designed to give sufficient military knowledge and skills to render effective service in the Royal Australian Navy in select roles.
