Process Engineer

A residential opportunity exists in Karratha, Western Australia for an experienced Process Engineer for the Yara Pilbara Technical Ammonium Nitrate Plant, with a main focus of optimizing plant operations on a daily basis based on any given constraint to ensure the highest production, efficiency and uptime is achieved without adversely affecting impacts on process safety, occupational safety or the environment.

Reporting to the Production Manager  the successful candidate will be responsible for continuous monitoring and troubleshooting  of the process, interaction with the Operations personnel and close co-ordination with all departments to ensure the plant is operating within its operating windows, applicable Yara, site and regulatory standards, and the necessary maintenance tasks and projects are being carried out and successfully implemented as required.

Job tasks and responsibilities

As key part of the Operations team, your primary responsibilities will be:

  • Working closely with site engineers in a systematic follow up of Plant production, production losses and optimizing production volumes and reliability
  • Advising of plant changes based on field research onsite and analysis of process and laboratory data
  • Provide technical and operational assistance to the HESQ department to assist with timely resolution of Environmental reporting, MHF safety audits and Inspection requirements
  • Initiation, assessment, and review of plant improvement projects and idea proposals
  • Management of production related projects working in close conjunction with maintenance and project teams
  • Develop and review scope of works for CAPEX projects and other production related projects.
  • Review process operating parameters and quality results to identify potential issues
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA's) and risk assessments as well as participate in HAZOP's when required
  • Job coordination with process operators and maintenance personnel
  • Custodian of all production SOP's
  • Enforce and facilitate the plant Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Understand requirements of working on a major hazard facility
  • Understanding of engineering and statutory requirements for a process (chemical) plant
  • Understand and learn planning, budgeting and cost control processes

Skills and experience

  • Masters or Honors degree in Chemical/Process Engineering
  • Minimum of 5-10 years within a position in the Chemical/petrochemical industry, preferably in an Nitric Acid and/or Ammonium Nitrate Plant environment
  • Possess a high level of communication skills - verbal and written
  • Personal qualities of self-motivation, taking initiative and excellent analytical skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Languages: Fluent English is essential
