We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Rail Systems Communications Team Lead to join our Siemens Mobility team to work on Rail Systems Projects. Based in either our Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne offices, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within an area of the Siemens business that has immense market potential.
The Rail Systems Communications Team Lead is an expert in digital communication network analysis, design, implementation, verification and validation for rail signalling systems projects. Typically these could include trackside network communications systems, interlocking systems, centralised control room network systems and sometimes interface into a radio communications network. A Communications System Engineering Lead is expected to be an experienced leader who is able to take technical responsibility for their team's allocated system elements.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Leads the effort for the design of the communications system and its interfaces, and may be involved in directly overseeing the configuration, installation and test of the routers, switches, cables and other associated equipment, and prepare necessary technical documentation as part of system delivery.
  • Provides technical expertise in design and problem solving around various modes of communications in closed IP network environments within the railway signalling infrastructure. Rail Systems Communication engineers are also involved in feasibility studies in all aspects of data transfer through different types of communication systems including network and radio systems, and sometimes may include GSM-R, LTE and Tetra systems as needed for the particular project requirements, however, the bulk of the work is in rugged safety critical digital network systems using a mix of protocols.
  • Acts as the Engineering interface for their areas of responsibility to the Customer, Project and Project Engineering Management, the Bid Group, R&D, Product Line Management, Engineering, technical interface partners, and other key stakeholders as necessary.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the technical quality of their, or on larger projects their team's, engineering deliverables satisfies project scope and customer requirements.
  • It is aware of the financial and schedule consequences of their engineering decisions, and act to control cost and schedule in their areas of responsibility.
Experience:
  • Specific experience with the design, implementation and test of isolated safety critical networks for standard rail systems manufacturers interlocking products such as one or more of the following: Westrace MKII, Microlok, Smartlock, EBI Lock and similar interlocking systems. 
  • Detailed experience with the design of vital rail communications systems over optical fibre, copper, or sometimes radio networks. 
  • Planning and Management of vital and non-vital communications within project scope to client, statutory specifications and relevant standards
  • Identification of communications threats and risk through assessment and workshops with Stakeholders and identification of SFAIRP Mitigations
  • Liaising with Systems, Signalling and Train Control Engineering, Systems Assurance and Systems Integration to ensure communication requirements are implemented
  • Monitoring of all Communications related process and threats during delivery including supplier qualifications and managing incidents.
  • Organisation and management of communication Testing Activities including single point of failure identification study.
  • Considerable experience with the design, implementation and verification of industrial grade IP networks involving a number of switches and routers, preferably in a rail or industrial environment.
