The Queensland buildings group has been responsible for the design of a number of iconic buildings and pedestrian bridges in the local and international arena. In conjunction with the Building Structures leadership team, this position will contribute to the development of capability, and consequential business growth, in the areas of Building Structures Engineering consultancy.

Reporting to the QLD Buildings Group Leader and Structural Team Leader, the focus of the Senior Structural Engineer will be the ongoing development of Building Structures engineering capability within the Building Structures Businesses Unit.  The successful applicant will be responsible for the review and supervision of structural engineering design work within the Unit generally, leading Building Structures design input on a broad range of projects.

Responsibilities/ Accountabilities :

•           To provide Building Structures input on total project delivery for a broad range of projects within the general structural engineering area

•           To lead Building Structures input on such projects.

•           To prepare detailed tender submissions to clients outlining the structural engineering capability within the Building Structures Business Unit

•           To prepare project reports for clients summarising structural engineering issues and strategically advising on best outcomes taking into account the total context in which the client operates.

•           To develop systems and concepts for a sustainable approach to Building Structures engineering design

•           To develop and train less-experienced structural engineers within the Building Structures Business Unit

•           To liaise with other engineering-discipline groups on design issues

•           To provide assistance and support to other Building Structures units within the Australasia Division

•           To provide input into Arup global skills networks within the Building Structures area

•           To advise Senior Management in general, and report on issues relating to the growth and development of the Building Structures business for the within the QLD marketplace

 

Engineering-related Skills:

•           Minimum of tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering

•           Chartership with the Institute of Engineers (Australia) – IE Aust, or chartership with equivalent associations in other countries

•           Substantial knowledge and experience in building structures engineering consultancy and design

•           Substantial knowledge of the local marketplace, including critical issues and a sound client network.

•           Ability to undertake high-level analysis

•           Substantial experience in managing key projects, including the management of multi-disciplinary project teams

•           Substantial experience in the consulting engineering environment, including the ability to advise clients on cost-effective, sustainable solutions

•           Substantial experience in guiding the professional development of less experienced engineers (and hence, the skill development of the team)

•           Good communication and interpersonal skills (including formal and informal presentations, written communications and reports)

•           Keen sense of maintaining high standards

•           Keen understanding of “customer” needs (both internal and external), and the issues which may impact on maintaining effectiveness within a commercial environment

•           Intuitive to client needs as well as the project context, and creative in developing win-win solutions.

•           Ability to relate and work well with people at all levels within the team and within the wider office, as well as externally with clients

•           Ability to maintain personal effectiveness and team relationships at times of significant pressure

•           Proactive, but tactful, in ensuring others within the team meet deadlines (etc)

•           Organised and able to effectively prioritise even when demands are significant
