The Company
Australia Wide Engineering Recruitment is seeking to recruit a full time Electrical Engineer with proven experience in the field of forensic investigation of fires and explosions and the failure of electrical equipment and systems for an international forensic engineering consultancy.

The Ideal Candidate
You will be educated to degree level, be a Chartered Engineer and have the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Experience in giving evidence is Court is required and a background in power engineering would be an advantage.

The Role & Responsibilities
You will be responsible for maintaining your own case load and managing all aspects of your investigations.  This will include identifying and reviewing the scope of each investigation, interviewing witnesses, recording of physical evidence (both photographically and in written form), collecting evidence, analysing evidence (both witness and physical evidence), commissioning of tests where appropriate, verbal reporting, written reporting and provision of oral evidence in Court, if necessary. 

You will enjoy a high degree of autonomy and unparalleled satisfaction doing a job where the technical result really matters. You will manage an office in Melbourne and undertake marketing activities with clients to develop the business.  You will also be involved in the recruitment, training and supervision of new investigators from a range of disciplines.

The job will be very varied and involve a good mixture of site visits and time in the office.  It will also require regular travel throughout Australia and potentially overseas.  Our client offers a highly competitive salary and a number of other benefits with excellent career prospects.

Skills Required
  • Excellent theoretical and “hands-on” understanding of engineering and scientific principles. 
  • Proven experience in investigating a wide range of incidents, including those involving fire, explosion and engineering failures.
  • Ability to formulate a technical hypothesis to explain an event, and to “test” the hypothesis against the evidence. 
  • Natural enthusiasm for problem solving. 
  • Good communication skills for both interviewing witnesses, and presenting technical matters in a way that can be understood readily by non-technical people. 
  • Confidence and diplomacy.
  • Experience in a wide range of domestic, industrial and marine environments. 
  • Experience in working with and providing technical advice to legal counsel and technical and non-technical staff.
  • Experience of giving evidence in court is required.
  • Experience in identifying potential clients, carrying out marketing activities and providing technical presentations.
  • Experience in training and mentoring less experienced investigators.
  • Organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience of managing a small office would also be preferred.
