Council are seeking an individual with the enthusiasm and experience to coordinate strategic water management issues, to aid Council in its goal to become a water sensitive city.

Providing guidance and expertise, you will apply your specialised skillset to scope and approve Water Sensitive Urban Design concepts and prepare policies and planning controls that align with best practice urban water management, to guide both internal and external development.

Flood Risk Management Plans (FRMPs) are also central element of this role. You will scope, implement and appraise actions to implement adopted FRMPs, as well as ensuring Ecological Sustainable Development principles and Climate Change consolidations are observed and legislative requirements met in delivering FRMP actions. Utilising strong communication skills, you will promote understanding of the outcomes/ recommendations of the FRMPs within Council and the community. Further, you will identify, secure and manage external and internal funding opportunities for the purpose of urban water cycle management including implementation of FRMP recommendations.

Your previous experience in building relationships and partnerships will enable you to liaise with a range of stakeholders including Government and non-Government agencies, and to facilitate and support the Newcastle Floodplain Management Committee and Council's Water Working Group.

You will ensure you remain aware of risk management issues and proactively identify priorities for best practice WSUD and urban water cycle initiatives. You will also coordinate the cataloguing of any information from any source in relation to an actual flood event, as well as the cataloguing of corporate flood studies, MUSIC and catchment models/maps.

To be successful in this job you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as civil or environmental engineering and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Government legislation including the NSW Government's Flood Prone Land Policy and Floodplain Development Manual
  • An understanding of urban planning concepts and impact of urbanisation on urban catchments and the water cycle.
  • Illustrated understanding of hydraulic and hydrologic principles and current best practice approaches to the modelling and assessment for flooding, stormwater quantity and stormwater quality in accordance with best practice.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and partnerships within and between organisations.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple and complex projects
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills including the ability to write reports for submission to Council and to present information to Council, key stakeholders, and the community in a clear manner
  • Sound technical and professional knowledge, experience and skills in the areas of floodplain risk management, climate change adaptation and integrated water cycle management
  • Class 'C' drivers licence
