Materials / Mechanical Engineer- Future Submarine (FSM)
Fortburn is an Australian owned and operated ISO 9001 accredited company seeking the service of an engineer in the following field.
Background
Defence Science & Technology Group (DST) are seeking support research into the pressure hull steel for the Future Submarine (FSM).
Extensive development, evaluation and qualification process for the steel plate and forgings is required to ensure that the structural integrity of the submarine pressure hull is adequate.
Task Description
a. Assist with the management and running of off-site explosive testing trials in support of the Future Submarine Program (FSP;
b. Support a surge in test and evaluation requirements for the FSP, particularly in FY18/19 and 19/20;
c. Assist with the procurement of supplies and services as required to support the FSP;
d. Prepare and maintain DST laboratories/facilities for mechanical testing (including arranging the servicing of equipment);
e. Ensure the laboratory equipment are kept in calibration and certified (including arranging the servicing of equipment);
f. Conduct advanced mechanical tests such as explosion bulge tests, drop weights tests, z-tests, and high strain rate ductility tests on both steel forgings;
g. Perform metallographic evaluations on steel plate and forging specimens if required; and
h. Data analysis and reporting of results.
Skills & Attributes of Key Person
Essential:
a. Experience in the mechanical testing of metallic materials.
Desirable:
a. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or equivalent;
b. Skills in metallography and fractography;
c. Experience with optical and scanning electron microscopes; and
d. Experience in field trials.
