About the position: Senior System Engineer, Processing Design
 
Be part of the team that defines the architecture of Australia’s Future Submarine Combat System. Your experience in systems engineering and complex processing infrastructure design makes you the ideal candidate for this role. You will be working with Linux, Virtualisation and vendor application and GUI integration.

The Senior System Engineer shall be responsible for:
  • Development of the Future Submarine Common Application Environment (CAE) and Common Display Environment (CDE) including:
    • requirements derivation
    • technology investigations
    • prototype hardware and software definition
    • CAE and CDE design and integration
  • Design, prototyping, build and maintenance of a Linux virtualisation platform Standard Operating Environment (SOE) for the Common Application Environment that includes setup and deployment of:
    • Linux kernel’s;
    • Container engines (Docker, LXD, LXC);
    • Container cluster management and orchestration systems;
    • Virtual LAN’s;
    • Virtualised storage;
    • Pre-configured container template images with access to common virtualised services (storage, VLAN’s, system/network/user services);
    • Container/network/storage security mechanisms;
    • Failure recovery and hot-spare redundancy infrastructure;
    • User authentication systems.
  • Design, prototyping, build and maintenance of a Linux platform SOE for the Common Display Enironment that includes setup and deployment of:
    • Bare metal hypervisors, virtual machines;
    • Linux kernel’s;
    • Windows OS;
    • Container engines;
    • Container cluster management and orchestration systems;
    • Virtual LAN’s;
    • Virtualised storage;
    • Pre-configured container template images with access to common services (storage, VLAN’s, window manager, Wayland compositor);
    • Container images that have access to virtualised storage and VLAN’s.
    • Container/network/storage security mechanisms.
  • Ensuring that Architecture IPT work outputs are compatible with Combat System interfaces and architectural models.

Significant experience and knowledge of:
  • Red-Hat Linux 7/CentOS server operating system design, configuration, administration and troubleshooting;
  • Container platforms (Docker, LXC, LXD);
  • Container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, Open-shift, Red-hat Atomic);
  • Linux Hypervisors and Virtual Machines (ESXi, KVM);
  • Dimensioning and performance analysis of virtual processing environments including resource allocation;
  • Reliability analysis of virtual processing environments, failover design. Server resilience and recovery;
  • Hardware server evaluation
  • the application of computer security within virtual processing environments;
  • Virtualised storage design, dimensioning and setup;
  • Virtualised network design, dimensioning and setup.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a related engineering discipline (from a recognised institution) is highly desirable;

Developing our staff is important to us and we have a number of training programs that include the Submarine Domain, Systems Engineering and specialist packages that have been implemented and have received great feedback from the existing team.
