Due to the growth of our business and an expanded portfolio of projects, an exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated Senior Highways Engineer to join our team.

As part of the Transport and Resources team, this role covers a broad range of skills relating to Highways design. The primary focus of this role is to contribute to developing the Highways design services of our business, supporting our clients and building a profitable Transport and Resources team.

The Senior Highways Engineer will undertake design, project management and consulting services within Highways design in order to enhance the team’s portfolio of skills and expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will:

  • Be responsible for small to medium sized teams/ projects, or key contributions to larger ones;
  • Brings long term benefit for internal or external stakeholders as part of a project/group;
  • Represents Arup at internal and external meetings;
  • Take a longer term strategic view of the business and contributes to the development plan of Arup;
  • Responsible for executing responsibilities as outlined in Arup’s Quality Management System;
  • Contributes to the development of others by providing guidance, training, motivation and direction to staff;
  • Sets budgets and is responsible for negotiating agreements with customers and suppliers in order to achieve financial targets;
  • Provide design and consulting services for various major roads projects and related areas, for a range of clients such as local government, construction contractors and private clients;
  • Provide technical consultation in areas such as road design, stormwater drainage design, and pavement design;
  • Deliver design, technical documentation, cost estimates, tender submissions, project scheduling and meets deadlines and budgets.


You will have demonstrated:

  • Relevant industry experience in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on major road design, including application of highway design skills within a consulting business environment;
  • Extensive experience working closely with design teams, and understanding of the relevant design tools including MX, and AutoCAD;
  • The ability to effectively manage design processes;
  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership;
  • Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines including OH&S.


With recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering or similar, you will be able to demonstrate your experience in design, project management and implementation in your field, within a consulting business environment.

You will possess demonstrated excellent attention to detail along with high-level verbal and written communication skills. Additionally, you will have proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.

Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership will be highly regarded.
