 A national shipbuilding endeavour is about to start in South Australia.

BAE Systems is excited to have been selected to deliver nine Future Frigates for the Royal Australian Navy. The Global Combat Ship - Australia is based on BAE Systems' Type 26 frigate, one of the world's most advanced anti-submarine warships, which the company is currently constructing in Glasgow for the Royal Navy.

 

The new ships, to be called the Hunter class, will be built in South Australia by an Australian workforce, using Australian suppliers from every state and territory.

 

As the Senior Mechanical Engineer - Auxiliary Systems you will be responsible for leading a small team of Engineers to design and deliver the Hunter Class foremast marine systems.

 

In terms of more specific responsibilities, you will:

Lead the conduct of technical analyses and investigations including evaluation and selection of technical options, the preparation of reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability.

Progress and provide reports on the plan for the marine systems design effort to ensure delivery of scope to budget and schedule.

Prepare specifications, develop designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards, and carry out design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained.

Act as the main point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on foremast marine system matters, to resolve relatively complex problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives.

Maintain firm control of customer and supplier requirements, ensuring adherence to the established design change process to manage scope creep.

Provide a conduit for UK to Australia knowledge transfer of GCS-A product and process knowledge.

 

As the ideal applicant you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering
  • Extensive experience in being responsible for the development of mechanical designs, participation in design reviews, analysis and implementation of solutions, their integration, validation, qualification, testing, delivery and support, ideally in piping and air systems
  • Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills
  • A people leader who thrives on sharing knowledge and insights with the team to further develop their skills.
  • Flexibility to travel to the UK 2-3 times per year and regular domestic travel  to visit our customer and suppliers.

 

As Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain appropriate clearance.

International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) are applicable and as such, your nationality may be a factor in determining your suitability for this role.
