Due to a strong product development pipeline a fantastic opportunity is now available for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join Boart Longyear’s Research and Development Engineering Team.

Based in Adelaide and reporting to the Global Research and Development Manager your primary functions will be to:   

  • Investigate, research and execute design and development work of exploration drilling rigs and associated equipment with a strong focus on safety.
  • Provide engineering support to the operational and sales teams with regards to drilling rig modifications and improvements.
  • Research of new drilling equipment, materials and manufacturing technologies, design and drafting, product development, on site testing, and general technical product support.

Position responsibilities will include but not be limited to:  

  • Working effectively in a team environment interacting with peer engineers, operational personnel, Maintenance, Sourcing, suppliers and product line managers.
  • Develop and facilitate delivery of engineering designs for drill rigs and auxiliary equipment based on safety, benchmarked testing, best practices and new technologies.
  • Question the norm to drive continuous improvement of equipment, products and processes being used in the field.
  • Undertake engineering calculations and develop specifications necessary for the justification of designs.
  • Document designs and specifications including 3D modelling, manufacturing drawings, process specifications, DFMEA and risk assessments.
  • Work closely with and provide support to other members of the engineering team through the sharing of ideas and knowledge as required.
  • Analyse test results, prepare detailed reports and recommendation documentation.
  • Development of product & site support literature.
  • Working within project timelines & budgets.

The successful applicant will possess the following:

  • Degree in Engineering (Mechatronic or Mechanical preferred), or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of 3D modelling principles preferably using Creo and an understanding of PLM systems (Windchill).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that will enable effective communication with all levels of the business.
  • An understanding of drawing standards and geometric tolerancing.
  • Knowledge of materials and surface treatments.
  • Flexibility to occasionally travel to mine sites as required (intrastate, interstate and international).

Due to the level of complexity of the projects we currently have on our schedule we are looking for an engineer who has previous exposure to the design of heavy equipment and has an appreciation of what automation can provide to these types of machines.  If this is you and you’re the type of engineer who gets a kick out of seeing your project through all stages of the design process, then this role is for you.  It’s a promise that you will see your designs, first hand, at work in the real world!
