In this exciting opportunity, your main responsibilities will be as follows:

  1. Monitor and ensure products manufactured by sub-contractors meet Howden’s quality standards and procedures.
  2. Identify any non-conformances and be involved in the prevention and solution of these non-conformances. 
  3. Develop and instruct new suppliers on the company’s quality requirements and best practices.

Accountabilities

  1. Inspect and verify that the manufacture of sub-contracted Howden products are as per Howden drawings and specifications provided.
  2. Prepare progress inspection reports & release certificates for future reference and for the client.
  3. Review for correctness and collect QA documentation/records for future reference and for the client.
  4. Identify non-conformances and work through the solutions to ensure continuous improvement and future prevention.
  5. Fill in the inspections register and plan daily inspection activities to ensure all the inspections can be covered.
  6. Expedite sub-contractors and report progress to Project Managers to ensure sub-contractors meet project deliverables.
  7. Monitor sub-contractors performance to help Howden assess and maintain quality suppliers.
  8. Responsible for overall quality and ensuring product matches drawing and warranty risks are minimised.
  9. Embrace Colfax Business Systems (CBS) and apply the use of the core company values.
  10. Compliance with Legal, Health and Safety requirements of the company
    1. Take all reasonable care for your own personal health and safety, as well as for that of everyone who may be affected by your actions in your workplace.
    2. Liaise and co-operate with company management with regards to the current health and safety legislation and obligations within the location and area where you are performing your duties.

About You

To be considered for this role you will have:

Essential skills, knowledge & behaviours

  • 10 years working experience of QC / QA in  heavy engineering (Manufacturing company)
  • Visual welding inspection qualification Level 2 (CSWIP or other internationally recognised qualification)
  • NDT level 2 qualification in MPI/ DPI or UT
  • Experience in understanding Engineering/Manufacturing drawings
  • Understand manufacturing, fabrication and machining processes
  • Experience/understanding of welding processes, procedures and relevant codes
  • Experience in report writing and QA documentation
  • Experience in developing and formulating customer & sub suppliers ITP’s (Quality Plans) and in compiling customer quality document packs in line with contractual requirements
  • Use and understanding of various measuring devices such as rules, micrometre, vernier callipers, dial indicators, tong tester and elcometers
  • Experience with NDT testing. (dye penetrant and magnetic particle)
  • Competent in the use of Windows and Office related programs
  • Competent in reading and writing in English
  • Competent in basic mathematics
  • Unrestricted driver’s license
  • Team player, capable of influencing & gaining confidence of suppliers and fellow associates

Desirable skills, knowledge & behaviours

  • Previous experience in QA role, in developing procedures, process’s and system development
  • ISO9001 systems knowledge
  • Experience/understanding of hydraulic and electrical instrumentation and lube systems
  • Experience/understanding of bearings and couplings setup and alignment
  • Experience/understanding of impeller balancing
  • Previous experience where a methodical approach and attention to detail were required
  • Previous experience with heavy industrial air and gas handling equipment manufacture and assembly
  • Trade qualified boiler maker, fitter, machinist or similar

Physical Requirements

  • General good health to allow physical inspection of Howden products, including excellent eyesight with the ability to differentiate colours correctly
  • Ability to climb ladders as required to access areas of inspection above height
  • Ability to drive to sub-contractor sites
  • Ability to fly long haul flights within Australia and overseas, often at short notice and for extended periods
  • Ability to carry out inspections in generally hotter climates than Sydney

Complexity and Creativity

  • Solve any non-conformances discovered and determine future prevention methods
  • Instructing and overcoming resistance by sub-contractors to correct any non-conformances and to produce products to Howdens high quality standards
  • Chasing QA documentation from sub-contractors
  • Expediting sub-contractors deliveries

Judgement and Decisions

  • Decisions are guided by drawings, standards and procedures. Any deviation from these to be in line with companies NC process
  • Part of the non-conformance solution and implementation process
  • Experience and judgement is used for the acceptance of final appearance and cosmetic issues
  • The ability to make decisions based on factual findings and reports is crucial to this position

  • Sub-contractor managers and shop floor personnel – inspections
  • Client and third party inspectors – client inspections and meetings

Travel

30% of your time will be spent in the Howden office and 70% of your time at sub-contractors premises or travelling (interstate and internationally).
