Detail information about job Commissioning Manager - Central Interceptor Project, Auckland New Zealand. Terms and conditions vacancy

World-class engineering for the city of Auckland

Watercare is seeking a Commissioning Manager to join our highly expert Central Interceptor project team.

As part of the ongoing, multi-billion dollar upgrade and expansion of Auckland's wastewater system, we are building a $1.2bn, 4.5m diameter, 13km wastewater tunnel - the Central Interceptor.

With 10 years' of planning and preparation now behind us, construction contracts will soon be let for this ambitious project.

Originating in Western Springs, the Central Interceptor will wind its way beneath residential and industrial suburbs, and then the Manukau Harbour, before terminating at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

As a long-term fix for recurring wastewater overflows into the Waitemata and Manukau harbours, the Central Interceptor will reduce overflow volumes by up to 80 per cent. At the same time, the tunnel will provide storage and transmission capacity to accommodate the city's fast-growing population.

The project

Watercare - New Zealand's largest water and wastewater utility - services 1.4million Aucklanders. The Central Interceptor is a critical, legacy project that will deliver far-reaching benefits for the people of Auckland.

Lying at depths of between 22 and 110 metres below the surface, the tunnel and link sewers will be supported by 17 shafts at 16 locations along the route. The shafts collect and transfer wastewater into the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, a major pump station will direct all flows into the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Construction will get underway in 2019, and project completion is scheduled for 2025.

The role

Reporting to the Executive Programme Director, the Commissioning Manager is responsible for successfully integrating the Central Interceptor and associated work into service with no impact or adverse effects on current operations. Responsibilities include:

  • Carry out investigations and projects to manage risks and review and approve commissioning plans
  • Supervising high risk commissioning activities and risk assessments
  • Assisting operational staff preparing work plans for their systems when new assets are being set to work
  • Managing and monitoring newly commissioned high risk assets to make sure project objectives are being met.

The successful candidate

  • 10+ year's proven experience in operating utility systems, preferably in the operation of wastewater treatment and transmission assets
  • A tertiary level professional qualification in Engineering, preferably a Chartered Engineer or equivalent
  • Proven ability to work with professional, technical and trades staff and contractors
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive in finding and implementing practical solutions to technical problems.
