The Communications Officer is responsible for tasking and coordinating activities of police vehicles responding to incidents. The role also processes urgent and non-urgent telephone calls providing timely information to operational police to enable appropriate action to be taken.
 
Key accountabilities
  • Generate and update electronic incident messages.
  • Receive and broadcast Police radio messages for routine and emergency incidents.
  • Answer and process both urgent and non-urgent telephone calls.
  • Coordinate and monitor the response of Police to incidents and maintain radio support, ensuring sufficient resources are contacted.
  • Notify the Duty Operations Inspector (DOI) or Shift Supervisor of all events which are serious, unusual or newsworthy.
  • Utilise computer based dispatch systems to record broadcasting and acknowledgement times, divert or duplicate messages and respond to incoming messages.
  • Monitor the activities of all mobile units, allocated resource and incidents coming within the operator’s span of control.
Key challenges
  • Remain calm whilst responding to calls and reports, ensuring that vital information is recorded in order to accurately determine priority and resources required.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge and understanding of relevant procedures and protocols regarding the response to calls and jobs to support service delivery and support a culture of safety.

JOB NOTES:
 
Applicants must satisfy the Aboriginality criteria (see above).
 
Essential requirements - applicants must have:
  • high level keyboard skills (minimum 35 wpm typing) and experience in Windows applications;
  • high level reading, comprehension and short-term memory; and
  • willingness to work rotational shifts 24/7. 
All applicants who are short-listed from the application stage will be required to undergo a range of computer testing including typing speed (a minimum of 35 words per minute), data entry, cognitive reasoning and reading comprehension. Applicants who meet the required standard will then proceed to an assessment centre where short-term memory, multi-tasking, decision making, resilience and problem solving will be assessed. Only applicants who rank highest in this process will proceed to the interview stage.
 
Initial entry requires undertaking the Training Program. This is a twelve week full-time course, which will be run at Sydney Radio Operations Centre, Surry Hills commencing 24 September 2018. All trainees must successfully complete this Training Program and probation period in order to retain their appointment.
 
This role is classified as a shift worker in accordance with clause 3.58 of the Crown Employees (NSW Police Force Administrative Officer and Temporary Employees) Award 2009. Shift penalties are paid as appropriate in accordance with clause 89.1 of the Award.
 
This recruitment may be used to create a Talent Pool for similar future roles (ongoing or temporary) that may arise over the next 12 months.
