Our client is a leading Australian Retail Broker that is going through significant growth, having opened offices globally over the past 3 years. An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Legal Counsel to join the team on a permanent basis in its Sydney head office.
 

This role reports to the Head of Legal.   
 
The purpose of this role is to develop, monitor and continually improve the legal framework within the Australian business.
 
Responsibilities
 
Managing the legal risk of the Group through:
 
• Giving accurate and timely counsel to executives in a variety of legal topics.
• Applying effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues.
• Communicating and negotiating with external parties (regulators, external counsel, public authority etc.), creating relations of trust.
• Advising on foreign investor issues
• Drafting and solidify agreements, contracts and other legal documents to ensure the company's full legal rights.
• Exploring and implementing structures.
• Reviewing and advising on disclosure documents e.g. PDS's .
• Assisting with the company's training requirements.
• Advice on possible regulatory breaches.
• Responsibility for managing all corporate legal matters. 
• Managing external counsel.


To be effective in the role the person will need to demonstrate the following:
 
Knowledge

1.       Strong knowledge of Financial Services Laws and regulatory framework;
2.       3 - 5 years PQE within Financial Services
3.       Knowledge of Retail Broking practices and procedures (preferred);
4.       Some experience of financial services laws and regulatory frameworks internationally (preferred)
 
Experience

1.       Experience in developing and managing a robust legal framework across a Retail / Broking business.
2.       Experience in delivering advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders/clients.
3.       You will need to demonstrate that you are a team player, pro-active in your approach to work as well as possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
4.        You can work in an unstructured and sometimes fluid environment with minimal supervision - must have initiative, motivation, and ability to think on your feet
 
Education

1.       Admitted as a solicitor in Australia.
2.       Current Australian Practicing Certificate.
3.       An appropriate tertiary qualification in Commerce, Financial Services, Audit or Accounting.
