Who We Are

The Registered Organisations Commission (the Commission) is established by the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 (the Act), and is responsible for regulating the activities of federally-registered organisations, their branches and officers. The Commission is staffed by employees of the Fair Work Ombudsman who are provided to the Commission to assist the Registered Organisations Commissioner (the Commissioner) carry out the statutory powers and functions under the Act.

What We Do

The Commissioner is a statutory office holder responsible for providing education, assistance and advice, ensuring compliance and undertaking enforcement to promote the efficient management of registered organisations and the delivery of high standards of accountability to their members under the Act. The Commission’s functions are allocated into three streams being Education and Reporting, Financial Analysis and Compliance and Investigation.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an experienced and professional Financial Reporting Assistant to work with the Commissioner and Commission staff to provide administrative and business support across the Commission and advice and assistance in relation to some of the financial reporting obligations specified in the Act to registered organisations.

To be successful in this role, you will have strong organisational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail and good written communication skills.  You will be able to manage priorities, meet deadlines and exercise discretion.  You will co-ordinate the Commission’s procurement process including organising purchase orders, the timely approval of invoices and monitoring and reporting on expenditure.  You will have the ability to work autonomously and demonstrate initiative.

You will oversee the lodgement and processing of a number of key financial reporting obligations under the Act including the registration of auditors.  You will use judgement to identify and escalate potential non-compliance issues and have the ability to build productive working relationships within the team and with stakeholders. 

Mandatory

A tertiary qualification and/or diploma/certificate in accounting, commerce, business or a related field from an Australian University (or overseas equivalent qualification) is highly desirable. 

The successful candidate will have previous experience in procurement and other finance and administrative functions.  Previous experience in assisting with the preparation of general purpose financial reports in accordance with the Australian Accounting Standards will be highly regarded.

Typical Duties

  • Under the guidance from the Commission’s Financial Reporting Specialist, provide advice to external clients in relation to the record keeping and financial reporting obligations of registered organisations under the Act.
  • Assess loans, grants and donations statements and auditor registration applications lodged with the Commission by registered organisations to determine whether they meet legislative requirements.  Prepare correspondence to registered organisations regarding compliance.
  • Assist with organising public information sessions for registered organisations and industry stakeholders regarding financial reporting obligations of registered organisations.  Assist with the preparation of materials to assist registered organisations in meeting their financial reporting obligations.
  • Provide advice, support and assistance to senior managers and staff within the Commission in relation to administrative and financial functions.
  • Assist with the procurement process within the Commission in accordance with relevant procurement legislation and related policies.  This includes assisting with the drafting and review of procurement related documents (e.g. requests for quotes, including those using panel or whole-of-government arrangements), providing advice and assisting staff with procurement activities and monitoring and reporting on expenditure.
  • Engage with key internal stakeholders to improve the support and services provided to the Commission and registered organisations.
