aleksandar. have been appointed to manage a recruitment process on behalf of a leading financial services institution to identify a Tax Manager in Sydney, Australia. Committed to being at the forefront of innovation and positive transformation, our client is looking for an up and coming tax professional who is serious about developing their career in a commercial environment.

The Tax Manager will be responsible for a range of taxation responsibilities across compliance, strategy and legislative/policy changes. The role will also involve assisting with timely and effective tax advice to global business units across the group. The position will sit within the core group tax team in Sydney and will report directly into the Head of Tax, a well-known, experienced tax professional who is currently based outside of Australia. 

Your success in this role will hinge on the strength of your technical experience in corporate tax. You will have a strong knowledge and understanding of taxation risk and regulatory requirements (cultivated at a big4 accounting firm and/or mid-tier accounting firm) and also best practice for a financial services institution operating in a global market.

In return, this position will provide you with excellent in-house tax technical exposure for a large global group. There is also a heavy focus on career development in the tax function as a whole and considerable exposure to senior executives within the wider business.

Our mandate is to attract and select a high-caliber individual from a top-tier institution who can manage the following key responsibilities;

  • Effectively communicate changes of law to business units and other interested teams internally that could impact current or future investments for the group.
  • Provide direct support to business units to ensure tax risks and opportunities are well understood and, if necessary, get involved to resolve service issues with advisors.
  • Maintain relationships and monitor performance to ensure advisors deliver exceptional service and value expectations.
  • Collaborate with tax colleagues and other Core Services departments to ensure the on-going tax management of investments meet global standards. Identify areas for improvement and recommend logical solutions.
  • Contribute knowledge of emerging tax issues to the delivery of tax risk reporting to the audit and risk committee, senior management (financial leadership team) and various internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Tax to ensure the on-going tax management of business operations across Asia Pacific meets global group standards.
  • Maintain high standards of effective oral and written communication to internal stakeholders to ensure ease of understanding and relevance to the business.
  • Suggest changes to internal tax polices/guidelines to ensure they are kept current and relevant given the evolving nature of the business operations across Australia and internationally. 
  • Actively contribute to the Tax group’s knowledge database and share ideas and options.
  • Assist in various special projects and initiatives.
  • Demonstrate the confidence and professionalism to work effectively with colleagues across the organisation.
  • Build the trust of the business unit leaders that are directly supported by group tax.
  • Develop, maintain and manage relationships with key individuals across Finance, Operations, Legal, Public Affairs and Communications and other Core Services groups.
  • Collaborate with the Tax group to leverage team knowledge and experience and deliver reports to senior management on tax issues, risks and opportunities across product divisions and geographies.
  • Promote collaboration and problem solving solutions within and across teams.

 Experience required to champion this position:

  • A minimum of 10 years corporate tax experience, with significant international tax experience within the financial services market.
  • Chartered Accountant (CA), CPA, law degree or comparable professional credentials.
  • Experience in the financial products, funds, international hedge funds space is highly desirable. 
  • Demonstrated writing skills, strong analytical skills, creativity in written presentation materials and strong oral presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think broadly about tax information, think through problems, assess a variety of factors and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to adapt one’s communication style based on the audience and proven skills in synthesising complex technical concepts into plain language for non-specialist audiences.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to efficiently manage multiple assignments.
  • Excellent attention to detail and consistent high levels of accuracy.
  • Strong impact and influencing skills with the ability to influence people with personal style and finesse rather than authority.
  • A consistent learner who stays on top of business trends and tax technical changes.
  • Flexible and able to work with light supervision and adaptable to change.
