The company

Marathon Targets is a successful SME with the global head office located in Sydney’s Inner West, with wholly owned subsidiaries in the USA and the UAE. We develop and manufacture a globally unique high-tech product: autonomous robotic targets for live-fire marksmanship training. Our systems are used by militaries and law enforcement agencies around the world.

The role

Our growing company is looking for a high calibre individual to undertake day-to-day financial and project management tasks. This is a hands-on role where you will work closely with senior management of the company and their accountant, and report directly to the CEO and CFO.

You will be responsible for the financial control of the Marathon group. Furthermore, you are expected to prepare commercial proposals and undertake project management tasks related to government-funded programs and grants.

The role suits an individual with a strong finance background and an interest in exposure to all commercial aspects of a global high-tech company. You need to have a high level of initiative, a problem-solving mindset, attention to detail, and exceptional communication and writing skills.

Your responsibilities and duties include the following:

  • Financial control
    • Take ownership of the Marathon group’s financial system.
    • Prepare monthly updates of the financials for the consolidated group (four companies): projected cash flow, budgets & forecasts,  consolidated P&L / balance sheet, and analysis of operational costs.
    • Prepare pricing proposals and quotations for our customers worldwide.
    • Accounts Receivables: track customer deliverables due dates, issue associated invoices, and ensure payment.
    • Accounts Payable: approve payable invoices, issue bank batch payments, and reconcile bank accounts.
    • Conduct intercompany transactions within the Marathon group. Includes the planning and execution of foreign currency exchange transactions.
    • Tax compliance tasks (in coordination with our external accountants): quarterly BAS, PAYG, US sales tax, VAT reporting in the UAE, and EOFY closure.
    • Payroll processing in Australia, USA, and the UAE.
    • Supervision of our bookkeeper including approvals.
    • Conduct renewals of company insurance package.
    • Ad-hoc financial analysis & reporting.
  • Project management
    • Support senior management in writing applications for funding, with a focus on the financial components.
    • Fulfilling ongoing reporting requirements and deliverables for government-funded programs including the AusIndustry / ATO R&D tax concession program.

Requirements

  • A University degree in either:
    • Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration; or
    • Engineering / Science with a strong work history related to finance.
  • 3+ years of experience in a position relevant to this job description.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting software, preferably Xero.
  • A “black belt” in Excel.
  • A CPA qualification is of advantage.
  • Strong managerial and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to multi-task and work both autonomously and within a team.
  • Able to take direction and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Prior exposure to an engineering environment is beneficial.
