The Gallery and Collections Manager is part of the Creative Production team.

The Creative Production team is responsible for delivering varied cultural, curatorial, creative and communications outcomes that help to realise the company’s vision. Creative Production workstreams include: marketing, communications and public relations; retail curation; research and publishing; cultural and public participation programs; and art and object collections.

The Gallery and Collections Manager responsibilities will be split across creative production; venue management and collections management. They will be primarily responsible for producing exhibitions and coordinating the logistics for the Nishi Gallery exhibition program, as well as supporting program development and marketing and communications to meet revenue targets (this includes gallery sitting and front of house duties during gallery opening hours: 11 AM - 6:30 PM, Wed-Sat). The Gallery and Collections Manager will also manage event bookings for Nishi Gallery, Kendall Lane Theatre and John Avery Gardens and other cultural sites as required and manage the Molonglo art and object collection and digital register.

 

Responsibilities

Creative Production:

  • Coordinate logistics for Nishi Gallery exhibitions. This includes but is not limited to: preparing contracts, preparing loan agreements, coordinating freighting, overseeing install and de-install, artist liaison, and planning exhibition openings.

  • Produce and host exhibition openings delivering exceptional artist relationship management.

  • Drive artwork sales to meet revenue targets.

  • Build a database of clients to meet artwork revenue targets

  • Work collaboratively with the Head of Marketing to develop strategies to increase footfall to the gallery.

  • Work collaboratively with the Head of Marketing to develop communications and sales materials for exhibitions.

  • Report and evaluate on Nishi Gallery exhibitions and public programs, and make recommendations for continued improvement and innovation.

  • Contribute to creative development of Nishi Gallery programming.

  • Grant, sponsorship and partnership writing.

  • Gallery sitting and front of house duties, including processing sales, during gallery opening hours (11 AM - 6:30 PM) Wed-Sat.

  • Ensure effective risk management and OHS.

 

Venue Management:

  • Manage event bookings for Nishi Gallery, Kendall Lane Theatre and John Avery Gardens and other cultural sites as required, maintaining a venue booking system and overseeing scheduling ensuring events are delivered within operational standards.

  • Provide monthly report on revenues.

  • Work closely with the finance team to ensure prompt invoicing of all bookings.

  • Ongoing development, reviewing and updating of all venue hire policies and site and event management procedures for clients, hospitality partners, and suppliers.

  • Identify new opportunities and avenues for increasing sales revenue in line with company values.

  • Upkeep Nishi Gallery, Kendall Lane Theatre, John Avery Gardens and other cultural sites as required including managing regular and emergency cleaning and maintenance at venues.

  • Maintain the security of Nishi Gallery, Kendall Lane Theatre, John Avery Gardens and other cultural sites as required.

  • Work collaboratively with the Head of Marketing to develop and produce event hire promotional materials.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance of all events across OHS, public safety and first aid.

  • Agree to and manage venue management budgets.

 

Collections Management:

  • Manage the Molonglo art and object register including:

    • processing new acquisitions;

    • collection maintenance and location moves;

    • cataloging;

    • database management; and

    • development of collection management processes and policies.

  • Oversee the curatorial accuracy of the art and object register including researching objects and writing descriptions.

  • Ensure the organisation and upkeep of art and object storage locations.

  • Conduct quarterly location audits of the Molonglo art and object collections.

  • Reporting on art and object collections as required.

  • Work closely with financial teams to ensure the seamless recording of arts and objects in the accounting system.

  • Curate and rotate art and object displays at Molonglo properties.

Successful candidates will have the following skills and attributes

  • 2+ years experience in a venue manager, event manager or producer role, ideally in a creative or cultural setting

  • Bachelor degree or higher

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Be process orientated

  • The ability to work independently and efficiently to consistently produce high-quality work

  • High degree of organization, self-motivation, and attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to multitask

  • Business acumen and financial management skills

  • Exceptional communication skills - verbal and written

  • Reliable, trustworthy and calm in the face of complexity

  • A genuine interest in and enthusiasm for architecture, the arts and the wider world

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proficient in G Suite

  • Experience working at a museum, gallery, cultural venue

  • Experience in art handling

  • Collections management experience

 

Hours and Location

5 days - Hours 10 AM - 6:30 PM, Tuesday - Saturday*

* Please note, this role requires occasionally working outside of normal hours for events.

This job is based in Canberra, and will require occasional travel to Melbourne.
