SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND ARTS
The UNESCO Chair in Journalism and Communication is a new position established in part to help drive and inform national and regional debates around the role of the media in a modern, digital world. Under the Chair’s guidance, the University of Queensland has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the recently formed Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom to work on a program of reseach that helps answer questions around the changing role of journalism in the digital environment. The research will initially focus on Australia but in the coming years will expand to include Asia and the Pacific region, producing work that will directly inform policy and legislation, and public and industry debates.
The role
The successful appointee will work with the UNESCO Chair, Professor Peter Greste, to develop a multi-disciplinary research agenda, to undertake their own research, and to manage other research projects under the chair’s umbrella. The role presents a unique opportunity to develop a program of work aimed directly at supporting public debate and policy making around the role of news and the media in a modern democracy. There will be opportunities to be part of research teams, to address individually-developed and collaboratively-generated research questions, and to supervise honours, masters and doctoral students.
The person
Applicants should possess qualifications in relevant disciplines. You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in journalism and media studies, good general research skills, a strong methodological background, excellent statistical and analytic skills, very good writing abilities, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams.
The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and actively encourages applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Please refer to the University’s Diversity and Inclusion webpage (https://staff.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/human-resources/diversity) for further information and points of contact if you require additional support.
Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to the contact person listed in the job advertisement.

Academic Level A
The remuneration package will be in the range $78,552 - $87,535 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $91,906 - $102,416 p.a.).
